There’s legacy, and then there’s Philippine Airlines. Flying since 1941, it’s Asia’s oldest commercial carrier, and still the only one from the Philippines offering full-service across all cabins.
The network is broad, reaching over 70 destinations across Asia, North America and the Pacific. Whether it’s a family visit, a city break or a stopover on the way somewhere else, PAL has routes that suit. The service leans warm, the experience familiar, and with sales landing often, fares can be friendlier than you’d think.
With over 40 international routes and more than 30 within the Philippines, Philippines Airways reaches further than you might expect. From Sydney to Seoul, Toronto to Tagbilaran, the network covers capital cities, island gateways and everything in between. It’s a route map made for long-haul leaps and short regional returns, which is especially handy if you're combining a family visit with a beach break or a city stopover.
When transferring through Manila, there’s plenty of international destinations you can get to with just one stop from Australia”
Philippine Airlines doesn’t wait for peak season to drop a good deal. Whether you’re heading home for the holidays or eyeing a long weekend escape, PAL releases regular promotions across both domestic and long-haul routes. Expect the biggest drops around national events, mobile app exclusives, and flash sales for loyalty members. Most sales are time-limited and seat-limited, so it pays to be quick.
Comfort doesn’t have to be complicated. Economy on most Philippine Airlines flights offers 84 cm of legroom and 43 cm of seat width, with a gentle recline that makes mid- to long-haul flights pass way more easily. Seat layouts are usually 3-3-3 or 3-4-3, depending on the aircraft, with adjustable headrests, USB charging and personal touchscreens as standard. On newer planes, you’ll find Panasonic eX2 inflight entertainment, loaded with movies, TV, and games, plus subtle design touches in calming blues and warm neutrals. Some aircraft now offer Wi-Fi access, with free messaging plans or full-data upgrades depending on your fare and membership.
A hot meal is part of the journey. Expect a rotating menu that leans into Filipino favourites - think chicken adobo, garlic rice, sweet-style spaghetti - alongside international staples. Meals are served with drinks and something sweet, with tea, coffee, juice and soft drinks included. You can also request special meals online, whether you're gluten-free, halal or just flying with a fussy eater. On shorter flights, a light snack is typically served.
Premium Economy on Philippine Airlines is made for the kind of long-haul where every extra centimetre counts. The dedicated cabin is laid out in a 2-4-2 configuration, with wider seats, 96.5 cm of pitch and 20 cm of recline. There’s a footrest to ease into, a 33.8 cm personal screen, USB and universal power ports, and space to stretch without encroaching. It’s quieter than the main cabin, and that sense of breathing room makes all the difference on longer legs.
Dining in Premium Economy brings a few welcome upgrades. Think china tableware, metal cutlery wrapped in linen, and plated meals with warm bread, fruit, a main course, and dessert. You’ll be served cocktails, tea, juice or coffee throughout, with nuts or crackers as a pre-meal bite. Special meals, like gluten-free, vegetarian, halal, can be pre-ordered online.
Business Class on Philippine Airlines is made for long-haul comfort. On most international routes, you’ll find lie-flat seats that stretch out to nearly two metres, with layouts that range from 1-2-1 on newer jets to wider 2-2-2 setups on others. Either way, you’ve got the space to rest, stretch and reset. Each seat includes a personal touchscreen, USB and universal power outlets, and just enough storage for the essentials. Upholstery runs deep blue with silvery accents, lighting softens overhead, and the cabin settles into quiet rhythm. Long-haul flights include full bedding and amenity kits - small details that add up when you're crossing oceans.
The inflight dining in Business is a destination in itself. Think plated meals with real cutlery, warm bread, a proper main like garlic beef tapa or baked fish, and something sweet to close. Wine and spirits flow throughout, starting with a welcome drink. On longer flights, there’s a second hot snack service to get you through the hours. And if you’ve got dietary needs, like vegetarian, halal, or diabetic, you can pre-order a special meal online. It’s all part of getting there fed, rested and ready.
Mabuhay Miles is Philippine Airlines’ frequent flyer program, which is free to join and easy to start. You’ll earn miles every time you fly with PAL, and through hotel stays, credit cards and retail partners. Those miles can go towards seats, upgrades or extra baggage, and as you fly more, the benefits grow.
Elite status kicks in after 25,000 miles or 30 one-way flights a year; Premier Elite follows at 45,000 miles or 50 flights. The highest tier - Million Miler - is for those who’ve flown (you guessed it!) a million miles with PAL, unlocking lifetime membership and priority perks that last beyond the arrivals hall.
Found in Manila, Cebu and Davao, Mabuhay Lounges offer space to refocus or refuel, with lounge seating, charging points, fast Wi-Fi, and hot meals and drinks throughout the day. Entry often comes standard with a Business Class ticket or Mabuhay Miles Elite membership. Premier Elites can bring one guest; Million Milers, two - as long as you’re travelling together. Just double check the terms of your ticket to make sure you can access.
Beyond the Philippines, PAL passengers can also access a network of partner lounges in key international airports. Access terms vary slightly by location, but most allow entry 2–3 hours before your flight. Check out the deets before you fly.

Philippine Airlines (IATA Code: PR) Philippine Airlines is founded by a group of businessmen led by Andres Soriano, one of the country's leading industrialist in February 1941. A month after being incorporated by a group of Filipino businessmen, Philippine Airlines takes to the skies with a twin-engine, five-seater Beech Model 18 aircraft from Nielsen airfield in Makati to Baguio on March 15, 1941.
Philippine Airlines always tries to show the essence of Philippine pride in various aspects. It’s first slogan was “Mabuhay”, a Tagalog phrase that means “Welcome”. The slogan had changed several times before it finally became “The Heart of the Filipino”, following its 75th anniversary.
Philippine Airlines’ logo had changed several times. This current logo redesign since 1986 by adding the yellow rays of the sun tucked between red and blue triangles, symbolizing the country’s flag and national pride. The lettering was also refined and now it features a delicate and smooth italicized Sans-serif typeface, which looks friendly and welcoming, while its black color points to the company’s reliability and expertise.
As of now, Philippine Airlines is one of the leading flag carriers in Southeast Asia, serving both passengers and cargo. Headquartered in Pasay, Philippine Airlines has its main hub at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila. The airport’s secondary hubs are located in Clark International Airport in Angeles City, Mactan – Cebu International Airport on Mactan Island. Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao and Iloilo International Airport. Philippine Airlines is the only airline in the Philippines that has earned safety accreditation status from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
During its service, Philippine Airlines has earned several achievements, such as becoming the official airline for the first state visit of President Ferdinand Marcos after his election in September 1966, monopolizing the domestic air travel in the Philippines in January 1974, earning the prestigious Les Chaines de Rotisseurs award for its high-quality in-flight meals in July 1979, earning the Airline Turnaround of the Year award from Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation in November 2007, emerging as the most trusted airline brand at the annual Reader’s Digest Asia-wide consumer survey in May 2010, and becoming the official carrier for Pope Francis during his visit to Tacloban, where he met with the survivors of typhoon Yolanda in January 2015.
In 2018 is a big won for our airlines. Our hearts beam with pride as Philippine Airlines is awarded a 4-Star rating from Skytrax, the international air transport rating organization. Across Skytrax's 45 global quality metrics that measure product and service quality, the Philippines’ flag carrier has proven its excellence and commitment to world-class standards. In 2019 Philippine Airlines not only remain standard with 4-Star rating by Skytrax but also won the World’s Most Improved Airline award, jumping 19 spots from being top 49 in 2018 to ranks 30th airline in the world in 2019.
In 2020, Philippine Airlines is among the top 10 airlines of the world in terms of traveler health and safety protocols adopted during the coronavirus pandemic, according to industry rating firm Safe Travel Barometer (STB)
More than 60 aircraft in its fleet, Philippine Airlines currently serves flights to 35 domestic and 41 international destinations around the world, including North America: The United States, Canada. Europe: United Kingdom. Asia and Oceania: Australia, New Zealand, Guam, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
To serve you better, Philippine Airlines is working on broadening its route network through Codesharing with select airlines, providing you with more destinations worldwide. In addition to PAL's own operated flights, PAL offers these flight sectors operated by our Partner Airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Turkish Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Gulf Air, China Airlines, Royal Brunei Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, WestJet, Malaysia Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, PAL Express and Bangkok Airways
Formerly known as Philippine Air Lines, Philippine Airlines (PAL) was originally a part of Philippine Aerial Taxi Company Incorporated (PATCO), a business franchise that specialized in transporting passengers, mails, and packages to Luzon. After the franchise had gone dormant for 6 years, PAL was founded on 26 February 1941 by industrialist Andrés Soriano, Sr., who also served as the airline’s general manager. Soriano started the company together with several business partners, among them was Ramon Fernandez, a former senator that later became PAL’s president and chairman. The airline served its first regular flights between Manila and Baguio, using a Beechcraft Model 18 NPC-54 plane. In July 1941, the airline started receiving investment from the Philippine government to start the nationalization process. However, shortly after beginning its new service in Cebu, Philippine Airlines experienced a hiatus from 1941 to 1945 due to World War II. When the war was over, the airline resumed its operation with 15 additional domestic routes. The airline also received five new Douglas DC-3 aircraft and employed 108 people. As part of a rejuvenation effort after the war, Philippine Airlines returned its base of operation to Nielsen Field Airport in Makati, and renovated it, turning the airport into the official entry for all airlines in the Philippines. In 1946, Philippine Airlines became the first airline in Asia that flew its plane across the Pacific Ocean as the American Army chartered its Douglas DC-4 to fly to California. The airline also expanded its international routes to Hong Kong, Shanghai, and San Francisco in the same year. Philippine Airlines moved its base of operation from Nielsen Field to Nichols Field in Pasay, following the government’s renovation efforts to turn the airport, which was originally a US Air Force base, into the international airport of the Philippines. In 1948, the airline began to invest PHP 600,000 in order to renovate Nichols Field. Pasay later became the permanent headquarter for Philippine Airlines until today. In 1962, Philippine Airlines officially entered the jet era, with the addition of DC-8 jetliners to its fleet. In 1968, the DC-8 fleet served the airline’s first services to Singapore, Saigon, and Taipei. Philippine Airlines continued to expand its routes to Australia, Europe and, later, the Middle East. In 1993, Philippine Airlines proudly sent its first female pilot, Ma. Aurora Carandang, to fly a Fokker 50 from Manila to Baguio. Philippine Airlines got its first competitors in 1995 with the president’s Executive Order 219, which allowed other airlines to operate in the Philippines after years of monopoly in the industry due to President Marcos’s one-airline policy. However, Philippine Airlines kept innovating its services to face competition, one of which took the form of a new ticket payment system for domestic flights using express teller machines in Davau, Metro Manila, and Cebu. In September 1998, during the Asian financial crisis, Philippine Airlines experienced a setback. The airline must reduce its routes and fleet, and laid off many of its employees. The airline resumed its services in October 1998, but only in very restricted capacity. Fortunately, a financial rehabilitation plan from Dr. Lucio C. Tan and his partners was approved by the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission. In 1999, Philippine Airlines finally resumed its full operations, and was able to earn PHP 44.2 million profits the next year. In October 2009, Air Philippines started taking over the entire operations of Philippine Airlines, and almost immediately added Boeing 777 as one of its fleets. The airline also made history by reconfiguring and improving the cabin condition of all A320 planes, becoming the first Philippine airline fleet that offered business class on domestic flights. In 2010, Philippine Airlines reopened its Middle East route after a four-year absence. In April 2015, Philippine Airlines started weekly flights from the Philippines to Quanzhou, Fujian, where many Filipino-Chinese families came from. In May 2015, Philippine Airlines reported a USD 85 million profit between January and March, thanks to its successful marketing and opening of new routes.
