Honolulu Airport (HNL), officially Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and formerly Honolulu International Airport, is Hawaii's main airport and the hub of Hawaiian Airlines. It is on Oahu, about 5 km northwest of downtown Honolulu and about 16 km (10 miles) from Waikiki. The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation runs it, and it shares its runways with Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Its Reef Runway was the world's first major runway built entirely offshore. There are three passenger terminals: Terminal 1 for Hawaiian Airlines' Neighbor Island and North America flights, Terminal 2 for international flights and most other airlines, and Terminal 3 for Mokulele Airlines commuter flights.
Flights from Australia arrive at Terminal 2, which is the terminal for international flights. Terminal 1 is for Hawaiian Airlines' Neighbor Island and North America flights, and Terminal 3 is the commuter terminal. Airline arrangements change from time to time, so check the terminal on your e-ticket before you travel.
Terminal 1 is used by Hawaiian Airlines for its Neighbor Island flights between the Hawaiian islands and its North America flights.
Terminal 2 handles domestic and international flights. Hawaiian Airlines checks in its international flights here, at Terminal 2 Lobby 4. The operator lists these other airlines at Terminal 2:
On a codeshare booking, the airline operating the flight is the one whose check-in counter you need, and your e-ticket names it.
Terminal 3 is the commuter terminal. Check-in is on the ground level, and passengers board the smaller aircraft by steps.
Free intra-airport shuttle buses link Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and the Skyline rail station along the ground-level roadway. They also run between the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 gates on the third level. Open-air electric trams and courtesy carts run within and between Terminals 1 and 2, and those two terminals are connected after security, so you can move between them without screening again.
Honolulu Airport is close to downtown and has both rail and bus links. Fares are set by each operator and shown at the station, the stop or in the operator's app.
Lelepaua Station sits between the International Parking Garage and the Terminal 2 Parking Garage. You can reach it from the ground level or the 4th floor of either garage.
TheBus W Line stops on Ala Onaona Street, east of the lei stands and in front of Lelepaua Station. It runs to Downtown Honolulu, Kakaako, Ala Moana Center and Waikiki.
Taxis wait in the centre median in front of the baggage claim areas, where dispatchers will direct you to a cab. On-demand door-to-door shuttles leave from the baggage claim level and go to locations across Oahu. Rideshare uses the designated ride-app pick-up zones shown on the airport's map.
The Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility is across from Terminal 2. You can walk there from the Terminal 2 baggage claim area, or take the shuttle from Terminal 1, Terminal 2 international arrivals or Terminal 3.
There are three garages, all open 24/7 with a 30-day limit: the Terminal 1 Garage, the Terminal 2 Garage and the International Parking Garage, which also takes overflow for Terminal 1. Terminal 3 has an open lot. Free cell phone waiting lots let drivers wait nearby until their passenger is ready, and accessible spaces are provided in every parking facility. Check rates on the airport's parking pages.
In Terminals 1 and 2, check-in, departures and the arrival gates are on the second level. Baggage claim and ground transport are on the ground level.
Terminal 2 has gift and apparel shops, Hawaiian packaged food, and flower and lei shops, so you can pick up a last taste of the islands before you fly.
Terminal 2 has airline lounges including the United Club, Admirals Club and Delta Sky Club, plus ANA, Japan Airlines, Korean Air and Qantas lounges. Pay-type lounges are in the Garden Court area. Hawaiian Airlines has lounges in Terminal 1. Access depends on your ticket or membership.
Restaurants and bars are in Terminal 1 around the A Gates and in Terminal 2, in the main area and around the C Gates. Their hours follow the flight schedule.
Smarte Carte runs attended baggage storage at the airport. Honolulu Airport is smoke-free from cabin to curb, with smoking allowed only in designated outdoor areas, such as the Terminal 2 ground-level group tour area and the Terminal 3 public lot. ATMs are in Terminals 1 and 2, on the second level and in baggage claim, and at the rental car area.
Free, advertiser-sponsored Wi-Fi covers Terminals 1 and 2, with faster paid options. A medical clinic is on the ground floor of Terminal 2 next to the Japanese Garden, and airport paramedics are on duty 24/7. There are seven accessible family restrooms, accessible curbside zones at every terminal, and free intra-airport buses with lifts or ramps.
Honolulu Airport recommends arriving at least 2 hours before an overseas flight and at least 90 minutes before an Interisland flight, or whatever your airline advises. Add at least 30 minutes if you are parking or returning a rental car. Passengers heading to the US mainland also pass a US Department of Agriculture baggage inspection, so leave time for that.
The operator does not say whether the terminals are open 24 hours. The main security checkpoints run from early morning until late at night, so check your airline's advice if you have a very early or late flight. Entry requirements for the United States, and for returning to Australia, are set by each government, so check the official guidance for your passport well before you travel. For flight times as they change on the day, check the Traveloka flight status page.
The fare cards on this page show fares from Honolulu to popular destinations, and the flight schedule tables list upcoming departures and arrivals at Honolulu Airport by date, with the airline and the scheduled times. They are a selection of flights, not a full timetable. Choose a route, compare airlines and times, and set a Price Alert if you would like to wait for the fare to change. Your e-ticket arrives by email and in the app.
