• Qantas: Australia’s largest airline, with full-service offered on this route for all passengers and fare types.
• Virgin Australia: Offering a mid-range service with entertainment and frequent flyer points, but no baggage or meals served without adding them on for a fee.

Cheapest time to fly from Melbourne to Bali

Our data shows that April and May are generally the cheapest months to travel from Melbourne to Bali. However, there’s not a massive difference in price from month to month, so if those months don’t work for you, you shouldn’t need to double your budget. It’s best to avoid travel during Christmas, New Year’s and school holidays though. Prices soar over those peak periods.

Arriving at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport

Bali has just one airport, so all flights will land at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar. It’s toward the southern end of the island and closest to resort areas including Jimbaran, Kuta and Legian.

Getting to your accommodation is easiest with either a pre-booked private transfer, or a taxi or rideshare booked at the airport. Depending on where you’re heading, here’s how long you can expect the journey to be if you’re staying in other destinations in Bali:

• Legian: 15-25 minutes
• Nusa Dua: 20-30 minutes
• Sanur: 25-35 minutes

Whether you’re flying budget or treating yourself to a full-service flight, the prices will fluctuate a lot. You can find flights for as low as AU$150 during a sale, or pay up to AU$400 each way for full-service. Right now, the cheapest prices we’re seeing are AU$416 each way.

How early to arrive at Melbourne Airport to fly to Bali

As it’s an international flight, you’ll want to get to Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport at least three hours before departure to ensure you have enough time to check in, drop off your bags, go through security and clear customs. (International flights are currently not available from Avalon, so all direct flights to Bali will leave from Tullamarine.)

Visa requirements for Bali

Australians do require a visa to travel to Indonesia, and luckily the process is simple. You can either get a Visa on Arrival (VOA) upon landing in Denpasar, or sort it in advance. The line ups can get long for a VOA, so we recommend getting it ahead of time. We can help, too! • Be flexible with your dates: Whether it’s the month or the day of the week, a little flexibility can save you a lot. Plus, when searching, we’ll show prices within five days of your original date to show you if prices are any cheaper.
• Know when promotions and sales are on: If you’re not in a rush to book, hold out for major sale periods like End of Financial Year (EOFY), Black Friday and Boxing Day.
• Fly mid-week: Fares tend to be the cheapest on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday when compared to weekend departures.
