A long-time favourite destination for Australians for a very good reason, Bali is a tiny island packed with big experiences. From raging waterfalls and jungles filled with monkeys to pristine beaches and luxe dinner clubs to historic temples and a colourful culture, there’s truly something for everyone here. Plus, it’s one of the closest and easiest spots ina Asia for Australians to get to.
Spanning about 4,400 kms about six hours, the flight from Melbourne to Bali is a medium-haul journey. Often, the return flights are overnight so you can have a full day in Bali and return to Australia in the early morning.
You have a fair range of choice when it comes to airlines flying this route. In fact, more airlines fly between Melbourne and Bali than Melbourne and Sydney!
Our data shows that April and May are generally the cheapest months to travel from Melbourne to Bali. However, there’s not a massive difference in price from month to month, so if those months don’t work for you, you shouldn’t need to double your budget. It’s best to avoid travel during Christmas, New Year’s and school holidays though. Prices soar over those peak periods.
Bali has just one airport, so all flights will land at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar. It’s toward the southern end of the island and closest to resort areas including Jimbaran, Kuta and Legian.
Getting to your accommodation is easiest with either a pre-booked private transfer, or a taxi or rideshare booked at the airport. Depending on where you’re heading, here’s how long you can expect the journey to be if you’re staying in other destinations in Bali:
Whether you’re flying budget or treating yourself to a full-service flight, the prices will fluctuate a lot. You can find flights for as low as AU$150 during a sale, or pay up to AU$400 each way for full-service. Right now, the cheapest prices we’re seeing are AU$416 each way.
As it’s an international flight, you’ll want to get to Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport at least three hours before departure to ensure you have enough time to check in, drop off your bags, go through security and clear customs. (International flights are currently not available from Avalon, so all direct flights to Bali will leave from Tullamarine.)
Australians do require a visa to travel to Indonesia, and luckily the process is simple. You can either get a Visa on Arrival (VOA) upon landing in Denpasar, or sort it in advance. The line ups can get long for a VOA, so we recommend getting it ahead of time. We can help, too! If you book your flight with Traveloka, we can add an Indonesian visa to you booking for the same price it would cost you to sort directly with the government (AU$50).
