The hotel location is very good, in the middle of the bustling Shinjuku area, short 7-10 mins walk to the station, make it easy to navigate around Tokyo. Lots and lots of shopping and eateries, airport limousine bus also stop in front of the hotel. Room is very small, but this is normal in Tokyo. Good choice if you love to stay in Shinjuku

Explore Amazing Experiences in Tokyo: Your Complete Guide to Get Ready for the Journey!

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, holds the distinction of being the world's most populous metropolitan area. It is located at the edge of Tokyo Bay, stretching along the Pacific Coast in central Honshu. Tokyo serves as the hub of Greater Tokyo, a vast metropolitan area that is the largest urban and industrial center in Japan.

The weather in Tokyo tends to be cool in winter and hot and humid during summer. Early summer and early autumn often experience rainy seasons, with a tendency for two or three typhoons in September and October. As a major center for industry, trade, and finance in Japan, this metropolitan area is home to numerous domestic and international financial institutions.

Tokyo is a significant distribution center for goods from both within the country and around the world. It is also an integral part of the Keihin Industrial Zone, which is centered along the western edge of Tokyo Bay. Light and heavy industries, particularly printing, publishing, and electronic equipment manufacturing, form the backbone of the city's economy.

In terms of transportation, Tokyo is a major hub in Japan and a vital point for international traffic. The city boasts an extensive electric rail network, a comprehensive subway system, and well-organized bus routes. The roads in Tokyo connect various areas, and Tokyo Station serves as the main terminal for all railways in Japan, including the bullet train Shinkansen services from western Japan.

How to Get to Tokyo

If you're a tourist coming from outside Japan, your most likely option to reach Tokyo is by air travel. However, besides air travel, there are several other transportation options to consider, depending on your budget.

1. By Plane

Tokyo has two operational airports: Narita and Haneda. Narita Airport handles most international flights and a limited number of domestic flights. It is located approximately 60 kilometers from central Tokyo. On the other hand, Haneda Airport, located in the city center, handles fewer international flights and mostly domestic ones.

  1. By Shinkansen

Another alternative to reach Tokyo from various cities across Japan is the Shinkansen, also known as the bullet train. This efficient and fast express train network connects the entire country, providing fast and comfortable travel options to Tokyo. You can take the Shinkansen from cities like Kagoshima in the southern island of Kyushu to Hakodate in the northern island of Hokkaido.

3. By Express Bus

Long-distance express buses in Japan offer a more affordable alternative to reach the city and explore the country. If you're looking to save costs and are prepared for a long bus journey, considering taking an express bus can be a wise choice.

Some buses offer more comfort than you might imagine, with power outlets and adjustable seats. For overnight journeys, additional facilities like blankets and pillows are usually available.

Certain operators even provide luxurious options with privacy curtains and extra legroom. The main departure and arrival points for express buses are the Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal near Shinjuku Station and the Tokyo Yaesu Bus Terminal near Tokyo Station.

How to Get Around Tokyo

Tokyo is a vast city, so transportation is essential for getting around. Most people choose to travel by train or subway, but there are also other alternative options to consider.

1. JR East

You can start using the JR Line right after exiting Narita Airport to reach various prefectures around Kanto. Around 23 districts in Tokyo are accessible via JR East services. You can purchase tickets directly at the stations using machines, tap PASMO and Suica cards, or opt for the JR Pass.

If you plan to explore Tokyo and its surroundings, consider purchasing the JR Pass. After completing the relatively easy registration process, you can use this pass across all JR Lines. If you plan to stay in Tokyo, the JR Tokyo Wide Pass might be the right choice. This pass not only provides unlimited travel within the city but also allows travel to the prefectures around the Kanto region.

2. Subway

Japan is known for its extensive and efficient railway network, and the Tokyo Subway system is equally impressive. With over 280 stations scattered throughout the city, the Tokyo Subway is an ideal choice for reaching destinations quickly and easily.

Clear maps with color codes serve as a very useful guide. With signage in multiple languages at stations and on trains, riding the subway is easier than ever before. Tokyo Metro and Toei Transportation often offer various discounted tickets for frequent subway use in a single day. Alternatively, you can obtain an IC card for easy access, exits, and transfers between lines.

3. Bus

Of course, buses can be a useful option if you are staying outside the central area of Tokyo. While not as frequent as trains, buses often cover lesser-known areas and can be a way to avoid crowded train stations. Some buses even provide free Wi-Fi. However, it's important to pay attention to routes, timings, and payment methods. Keeping a quick note about routes and payment procedures will help make the journey smoother and worry-free.

Things to Do in Tokyo

There are numerous activities you can enjoy in Tokyo. You have the freedom to organize them based on your preferences, as well as your available time and budget. Here are some options to consider:

1. Fashion Shopping in Shibuya

Tokyo is famous for being a fashion hub, and one of the best places to shop for trendy fashion is Shibuya. Shibuya is known as the center of youth fashion and culture, and many Japanese fashion trends and entertainment originate from its streets.

The area is surrounded by various shopping centers and malls that cater to different types of shoppers. The most well-known spot in Shibuya is the bustling intersection in front of the Hachiko Exit of Shibuya Station.

This intersection is famous for its large neon advertisements and giant video screens that adorn the surroundings. Whenever the green light flashes, the intersection is crowded with pedestrians, making it a popular spot for taking photos.

2. Visiting Tokyo Skytree

Tokyo Skytree is a relatively new tourist destination and has become one of the tallest towers in the world since 2018. Standing at a height of 634 meters, this landmark is an iconic presence in Tokyo.

Tokyo Skytree is a favorite destination for both foreign and local tourists. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic 360-degree view, including Mount Fuji, through wide windows on the Tembo Deck. For a higher viewing experience, there is a second deck called Tembo Galleria located at a height of 450 meters. Watching the sunset and the sparkling city lights below is a romantic experience.

3. Enjoying Food at Tsukiji Market

From 1935 until the end of 2018, Tsukiji was home to one of the most famous fish markets in the world. Although the inner market has moved to the nearby Toyosu, the outer market still remains captivating. Tsukiji Uogashi, a fresh fish market located in the outer area, features around 60 shops.

At Tsukiji Uogashi, visitors can witness experts cutting whole tuna fish. Tsukiji Market is situated on the edge of Tokyo Bay and is within walking distance from Ginza. It is highly recommended for tourists.

Here, you can enjoy the freshest sushi for breakfast at surrounding restaurants or purchase various unique souvenirs. From seaweed to sushi knives and handcrafted ceramics, the range of items available is diverse and reflects Japanese culture and craftsmanship.

Foods to Try in Tokyo

In addition to its entertainment offerings, Tokyo is renowned for its cuisine. Many restaurants in the city have earned Michelin stars, the highest culinary accolade. Here are some delicious types of food that you can enjoy in Tokyo.

1. Ramen

Ramen is a famous Japanese noodle dish with many regional variations. From shoyu ramen (with soy sauce-based broth) to ramen Shio (with salt-based broth), miso ramen, and tonkotsu ramen (pork bone broth). These variations also differ in the type of noodles used, offering different sensations while savoring the dish.

2. Sushi & Sashimi

Sushi is a highly popular traditional Japanese food. It typically consists of slices of raw fish placed on Japanese rice mixed with vinegar. It is often served with soy sauce and wasabi. There are various types of sushi, including nigiri, maki, and chirashi, which are among the most popular. On the other hand, sashimi consists of thin slices of raw fish served without rice. The fish is usually dipped in soy sauce and wasabi according to personal preference.

3. Gyudon

Gyudon is a simple dish made with thinly sliced beef simmered with onions in a dashi, soy sauce, and mirin broth. It is then served on top of warm Japanese rice. Gyudon is a delicious dish that can be found easily throughout Japan. Due to its simple preparation, it is also a common choice for home-cooked meals.

Nightlife in Tokyo

Tokyo offers a vibrant nightlife with a variety of activities that take place until the late hours. During the winter season, there are illumination events and Christmas markets that are popular. In the blooming Sakura season, parks become venues for late-night parties.

Additionally, Tokyo hosts sake festivals, beer festivals, live music concerts, stunning fireworks displays, and traditional summer festivals. The energetic atmosphere is always present in these events.

Many iconic attractions in Tokyo, such as aquariums, art galleries, and museums, remain open until late at night. Some of the most popular ones include the Mori Art Museum, Sumida Aquarium, and Tokyo Tower. Tokyo Tower is particularly convenient for nighttime visits followed by a dinner cruise on Tokyo Bay. Alternatively, you can enjoy dining at one of the nearby nightlife spots, such as Ebisu.

The largest and busiest nightlife areas in Tokyo are Roppongi, Shibuya, and Shinjuku. Roppongi, known for attracting international tourists, is home to many famous nightclubs in Tokyo.

In Shibuya, you can experience a slightly cooler and unique atmosphere compared to other areas. Meanwhile, Shinjuku offers a range of small bars in Golden Gai and various intriguing entertainment venues in Kabukicho.

Travel Tips for Visiting Tokyo

Visiting a new and foreign city can be challenging for some people. To fully enjoy the best experience in Tokyo, there are a few things to consider before you go. Here are some tips to follow when planning a trip to Tokyo.

1. Purchase smart cards

When traveling to Japan, it's essential to consider buying IC Cards, also known as smart cards. These cards are incredibly useful as they simplify transportation in Tokyo. Pasmo and Suica are two major transportation cards that offer great convenience. Not only can they be used for travel on trains or buses, but they can also be used for certain payments. You can obtain these cards at railway station kiosks, usually requiring a refundable deposit of around ¥500.

2. Carry your passport for tax-free shopping

In Japan, tax refund services for international tourists are available in many stores and retail outlets. Most shopping centers in Tokyo have designated areas specifically for tax refunds. To use this service, always make sure to carry your passport with you when shopping.

3. Internet Access

Finding completely free Wi-Fi in Tokyo can be somewhat challenging. Many public Wi-Fi networks require a Japanese address or phone number, and connections in cafes or restaurants may not always be reliable.

To make your travel smoother, it is recommended to purchase a temporary SIM card at the airport or electronic stores. Another alternative is renting a pocket Wi-Fi device at the airport. Additionally, there are e-SIM card apps like Airalo that allow you to purchase data packages starting from AU$ 6.72 for seven days. This can be a practical solution for getting internet access while in Japan.

Traveloka offers various travel packages that include flight tickets, accommodations, and Tokyo's famous attractions. With the Traveloka application, you can explore the city more easily and affordably. Choose from the range of tour packages we offer and customize them according to your preferences to get the combination you desire the most.

Shinjuku Washington Hotel Main
The main reason I chose this hotel was the direct access from the airport. The Limousine airport bus stops right at this hotel's lobby. Everything else is quite standard. Nice neighborhood, central but not in the busiest part of the city. I must say the room and the bathroom were tiny, but well equipped. I guess when you're in Japan you just have to get used to small spaces. I might stay there again though.
