Our first time in Batu, we stayed at the Golden Tulip Holland Resort. The place is beautiful, spacious, and clean. There are two breakfast restaurants with a variety of dishes, Western and Indonesian. The food is delicious, and the staff is friendly. There are electric scooters provided in the hotel lobby for exploring the area. We especially enjoyed eating at the Skydome. During our two-night stay at the Golden Tulip, we had dinner at the Skydome. The place is certainly Instagrammable, and the food was delicious and generous.

My first impression upon arriving at this hotel was the incredibly calming vibe... I wanted to stay here for a long time. The staff were also very friendly. While waiting to check in, I was able to enjoy the hotel facilities, so the kids wouldn't get bored. The swimming pool, although not large, had a really nice atmosphere. And while the kids were swimming, we could also order delicious food at the restaurant. Oh yeah, it's also just a short walk to Batu Mall, so it was really nice to stay here 😍 Keep up the good work, Samara Hotel, I'll definitely be back soon!

A very affordable hotel, close to the town square, close to JTP, close to the souvenir center, close to the mall. Great! Check-in time seems relaxed, parking is available and sufficient. Because it excludes breakfast, you can get breakfast on the side of the road while walking around, the price is also reasonable. For the room, I happened to book a deluxe twin bed because my child is quite big, so this is the best. The room is also spacious, the bathroom water is safe, warm, and fragrant. lol, thanks yaa

Food & Dining

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Batu

Batu's culinary scene is a delightful exploration of East Javanese flavours, offering a distinct taste of Indonesian cuisine that appeals to a wide range of palates. While sharing commonalities with broader Indonesian fare, Batu has its own specialties, often influenced by its highland setting and agricultural bounty. Dishes like "Sate Kelinci" (rabbit satay), a local delicacy due to the region's rabbit farms, and "Jagung Bakar" (grilled corn) are must-tries. The cooler climate also lends itself to comforting soups and warm beverages, providing a unique gastronomic experience distinct from Indonesia's coastal cities.

For an authentic taste of Batu, exploring local markets and street food stalls is highly recommended. Areas around the central Batu market and near popular attractions like Jatim Park 2 are brimming with vendors offering delicious and affordable meals. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal food is generally straightforward in Batu, as Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and most local eateries adhere to Halal practices. Look for "Warung Nasi" (rice stalls) or restaurants displaying Halal certification for added assurance.

The cost of dining in Batu offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food and local "warungs" can provide a filling meal for as little as ₱50-₱100 (approximately $1-2 USD). Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱200-₱500 (approximately $4-10 USD) per person for a full meal, including drinks. Even more upscale dining experiences at hotels like the Golden Tulip Holland Resort Batu are considerably more affordable than comparable establishments in Western countries, with main courses often ranging from ₱500-₱1,000 (approximately $10-20 USD).

When dining in Batu, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are typically enjoyed with family and friends, and it's common to eat with a spoon and fork, though some dishes are traditionally eaten with hands. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, usually around 10%. It's polite to wait for elders to begin eating first. Familiarizing yourself with basic Indonesian phrases for ordering food can also be helpful and is often met with warm appreciation from local vendors.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Batu

Understanding local etiquette is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Batu. Indonesians are generally known for their politeness and hospitality. It's customary to greet people with a smile and a polite "Selamat pagi" (good morning), "Selamat siang" (good afternoon), or "Selamat malam" (good evening). When interacting with locals, especially elders, showing respect is paramount. Avoid using your left hand to give or receive items, as it's traditionally considered unclean. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum, as they are not common in Indonesian culture.

When visiting hotels like the Senyum World Hotel or Golden Tulip Holland Resort Batu, standard etiquette applies. Dress modestly when in public areas, especially when visiting religious sites, though resort wear is acceptable within the hotel premises. Photography of people should always be done with permission. Queuing is generally observed, but patience is a virtue, as service can sometimes be more relaxed than in Western countries. Being mindful of noise levels, particularly in residential areas or during prayer times, is also appreciated.

Safety in Batu is generally good, with the city being a popular tourist destination. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or tourist spots. For transportation, using ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek is a safe and convenient option, offering transparent pricing. Familiarize yourself with the local currency, the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and ensure you have small denominations for smaller purchases.

In case of emergencies, the local police number is typically 110. For medical assistance, dial 118. While Batu is a safe city, it's always prudent for Filipino travellers to have the contact details for the Philippine Embassy in Indonesia, located in Jakarta, for any consular assistance. It's also advisable to register your trip with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and consider travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip disruptions. Staying informed and prepared ensures a worry-free journey.
