Our first time in Batu, we stayed at the Golden Tulip Holland Resort. The place is beautiful, spacious, and clean. There are two breakfast restaurants with a variety of dishes, Western and Indonesian. The food is delicious, and the staff is friendly. There are electric scooters provided in the hotel lobby for exploring the area. We especially enjoyed eating at the Skydome. During our two-night stay at the Golden Tulip, we had dinner at the Skydome. The place is certainly Instagrammable, and the food was delicious and generous.

The hotel is located in one of the largest malls in Malang. It's close to other places like culinary delights and tourist attractions. The service is good and the rooms are clean. If you're going on a Bromo trip, you can be picked up from here, and upon returning from your trip, you'll still be given a late check-out period of 12:30 PM. This was my experience yesterday. It was very helpful, allowing us to shower and clean up before checking out. Overall, this is a good and comfortable hotel for your stay.

My first impression upon arriving at this hotel was the incredibly calming vibe... I wanted to stay here for a long time. The staff were also very friendly. While waiting to check in, I was able to enjoy the hotel facilities, so the kids wouldn't get bored. The swimming pool, although not large, had a really nice atmosphere. And while the kids were swimming, we could also order delicious food at the restaurant. Oh yeah, it's also just a short walk to Batu Mall, so it was really nice to stay here 😍 Keep up the good work, Samara Hotel, I'll definitely be back soon!

Culinary Delights of Wajak

Wajak's culinary scene is a vibrant reflection of Indonesia's diverse gastronomic heritage, offering a delightful array of flavours that cater to every palate. From the fiery spices of traditional Javanese dishes to the subtle sweetness of local desserts, the region presents a diverse mix of tastes. Iconic dishes like Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and Satay (grilled skewers) are ubiquitous, but exploring local specialties such as Rawon (a rich beef soup) or Orem-Orem (a vegetable dish in peanut sauce) provides a deeper connection to the area's food culture.

For an authentic taste of Wajak, exploring local markets and street food stalls is a must. Areas like the bustling markets in Malang city, particularly around Klojen and Blimbing, offer a sensory feast with vendors preparing fresh, local delicacies. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal food is generally straightforward, as Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and most eateries adhere to Halal practices. Look for the Halal certification mark or simply inquire, as most vendors are happy to confirm.

The affordability of dining in Wajak is a significant draw for international visitors. Street food can be enjoyed for as little as ₱30-₱60 (around $0.50-$1 USD), while a meal at a mid-range local restaurant typically costs between ₱150-₱300 (around $3-$6 USD). Even upscale dining experiences are considerably more affordable than in Western countries, with a three-course meal for two at a nice restaurant rarely exceeding ₱1,000-₱1,500 (around $20-$30 USD). This makes Wajak an excellent destination for food lovers on a budget.

When dining in Wajak, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are typically enjoyed with family and friends, and it's polite to wait for elders to begin eating. Tipping is not customary in most local eateries, though a small gratuity may be appreciated in high-end restaurants. Using your right hand for eating and handling food is preferred, as the left hand is traditionally considered unclean. Observing these simple etiquette points will ensure a more respectful and enjoyable culinary journey.

Navigating Wajak: Etiquette and Safety for International Visitors

Understanding local customs and etiquette is key to a respectful and enriching visit to Wajak. Indonesians are generally known for their politeness and hospitality, and a little effort to observe local norms goes a long way. Greetings are important; a gentle handshake is common, and it's polite to use your right hand. When visiting homes or more traditional settings, it's customary to remove your shoes before entering. Patience and a smile are invaluable when navigating cultural differences, ensuring positive interactions.

When exploring Wajak, dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. For women, this means covering shoulders and knees. While tourist areas are more relaxed, showing respect for local sensibilities is always appreciated. Photography is generally permitted, but it's always courteous to ask for permission before taking pictures of people, particularly in more rural or traditional settings. Queueing is not always strictly observed, so maintaining a calm and patient demeanor is advisable when waiting for services.

Safety in Wajak is generally good, with petty crime being the most common concern, similar to many tourist destinations. It's advisable to keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around Malang and its surrounding areas. Always ensure your taxi meter is running or agree on a fare beforehand if using traditional taxis.

For any emergencies, the general police number in Indonesia is 110. For medical assistance, dial 118. Filipino travellers should be aware of the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia, which is located in Jakarta, for any consular assistance. It is also recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and to be mindful of health precautions, such as drinking bottled water and ensuring food is cooked thoroughly. Staying informed and prepared will ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to Wajak.

Your Wajak Travel Essentials

Reaching Wajak from the Philippines is most conveniently done via flights to Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport (MLG) in Malang, which serves the Wajak region. While direct flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) are uncommon, travellers can find connecting flights through major hubs like Kuala Lumpur (KUL), Singapore (SIN), or Jakarta (CGK). The total travel time can range from 6 to 12 hours, depending on the layover. Booking your book flight in advance, especially during peak seasons, is recommended for better fares, which can range from ₱8,000 to ₱15,000 round trip.

Navigating Wajak and its surrounding areas is relatively straightforward. Within Malang city, local buses (angkot) are an affordable way to get around, though they can be crowded and follow specific routes. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are readily available and offer a more comfortable and direct mode of transport, with fares typically starting around ₱50-₱100 for short trips within the city. For exploring further afield, renting a car with a driver is a popular option for international visitors, offering flexibility and convenience.

The best time to visit Wajak is generally during the dry season, from May to September, when the weather is pleasant with less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. This period also coincides with peak tourist seasons in some parts of Indonesia, so expect slightly higher prices and more crowds. The shoulder months of April and October can offer a good balance of favourable weather and fewer tourists. For travellers seeking to avoid the busiest times, the wet season (October to April) can still be enjoyable, with lush landscapes and lower accommodation rates.

Before departing for Wajak, ensure you have your passport with at least six months of validity remaining. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and establishments, carrying some cash is essential for markets, local eateries, and smaller vendors. Consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival for affordable data and calls. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for communication, and ride-hailing apps like Grab.

Visa Requirements for Indonesia (Wajak)

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Wajak, which is located in Indonesia, understanding the visa regulations is crucial. Fortunately, Indonesia offers visa-free entry for Filipino citizens for short stays. Philippine passport holders are typically granted a visa-free stay of up to 30 days upon arrival, provided the purpose of visit is tourism or short business trips. It is essential to ensure your passport has at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay and that you have proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket.

The process for visa-free entry is generally straightforward. Upon arrival at the Indonesian port of entry (such as Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport in Malang), immigration officials will verify your passport and may ask for details about your itinerary and accommodation. While no visa fee is charged for this visa-free facility, it is important to note that this status is for tourism and short visits only; any other purpose may require a different visa. Always carry a copy of your passport and visa-free entry confirmation for your records.

While Indonesia's visa policy for Filipinos is generally favourable, regulations can change. It is highly recommended that all travellers verify the latest visa requirements with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Philippines or the official Indonesian immigration website before booking flights and making travel arrangements. Confirming your entry status ensures a smooth and hassle-free arrival in Indonesia, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip to Wajak and its surrounding attractions.
