From the moment I arrived, I was immediately greeted by very friendly staff, given a welcome drink upon check-in. Initially, the room's AC wasn't cold, but I called and they immediately fixed it. It's really confusing for those who gave it a 1 star. In my opinion, this is a 5 star plus. It's a 3 star hotel but the service is not inferior to a 5 star hotel. I will come back here again.

Best Areas to Stay in South Sumatra

South Sumatra is a region of diverse character, with distinct neighbourhoods and districts each offering a unique atmosphere and set of attractions. For international visitors, understanding these differences is crucial for selecting a base that aligns with their travel style and interests. Choosing the right area can significantly shape your entire experience, from the ease of accessing key landmarks to the local ambiance you'll encounter daily.

Bukit Kecil

Bukit Kecil, a central district in Palembang, offers a dynamic urban experience with a strong local flavour. It's an area where daily life unfolds amidst a backdrop of commercial activity and residential pockets. For travellers who enjoy being in the thick of things, with easy access to local markets and eateries, Bukit Kecil provides an authentic glimpse into Palembang's rhythm. It’s particularly appealing to those who value immersion over curated tourist experiences.

This district is well-connected, making it a practical choice for exploring the wider city. While not directly home to major shopping malls like Palembang Square, it offers convenient access to them via short taxi or ride-hailing trips. The area is dotted with smaller shops and local food stalls, providing ample opportunities to sample regional delicacies. Getting to Bukit Kecil from the airport is straightforward, typically involving a taxi or pre-booked transfer.

Plaju

Plaju, situated on the eastern bank of the Musi River, presents a more laid-back, riverside charm compared to the bustling city centre. This district is known for its residential areas and a slower pace of life, offering a more tranquil base for visitors. It’s an area that might appeal to travellers seeking a quieter stay, perhaps those interested in observing local life away from the main tourist trails, and it offers a different perspective on Palembang.

While Plaju might not have the extensive shopping centres of other districts, it offers its own local markets and eateries, providing a genuine taste of South Sumatran life. Its riverside location offers scenic views and a connection to the water that defines much of Palembang's history. Access from the airport typically involves a taxi or ride-sharing service, and from Plaju, you can easily arrange transport to explore other parts of the city and its attractions.

Ilir Timur I

Ilir Timur I is a significant administrative and commercial hub within Palembang, characterized by its blend of modern development and established neighbourhoods. This district is home to several key landmarks and amenities, making it a convenient and engaging area for visitors. It appeals to travellers who appreciate having a wide range of dining, shopping, and entertainment options within easy reach, including proximity to major commercial centres.

This district is a prime location for accessing popular spots like Palembang Square and Palembang Icon Mall, offering extensive retail therapy and dining experiences. Its central position also means good connectivity to other parts of the city. For those looking to explore the cultural and historical facets of South Sumatra, Ilir Timur I provides a solid base from which to plan excursions and book attractions.

Ilir Timur II

It offers a comfortable and sophisticated base for exploring South Sumatra, appealing to those who prefer a polished travel experience.

This district is home to several prominent hotels and commercial establishments, contributing to its modern appeal. While it might not boast the historical depth of older areas, it provides excellent access to modern conveniences and dining options. Its proximity to key transport routes makes it relatively easy to navigate to other parts of the city and to reach the airport, ensuring a convenient stay for discerning travellers.

Sukarame

Sukarame, often associated with its proximity to the airport, offers a practical and convenient base, particularly for travellers with early departures or late arrivals. While it may not be the most central district for exploring Palembang's historical or cultural heart, its accessibility is a significant advantage. This area is ideal for those prioritizing ease of transit and a less hectic environment upon arrival or before departure.

The primary draw of Sukarame for international visitors is its convenient location relative to the airport, simplifying logistics for transit. Accommodation here often caters to short-stay travellers or those on business trips who value quick access to flights. Navigating South Sumatra: Local Etiquette and Safety

Understanding local customs and safety practices is essential for any international traveller, and South Sumatra is no exception. The region generally maintains a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, but being aware of cultural nuances and practical safety tips will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable trip. Respecting local traditions and taking sensible precautions are key to a positive experience.

When visiting public spaces like Palembang Square or Palembang Icon Mall, it's advisable to dress modestly, out of respect for local customs. While not strictly enforced in these commercial areas, overly revealing clothing can attract unwanted attention. Photography is generally permitted, but it's always polite to ask permission before taking pictures of individuals. Queuing culture is present, and patience is appreciated in busy areas.

South Sumatra is considered relatively safe for tourists, but standard precautions should be taken. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. Utilizing ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek is a reliable and safe way to get around Palembang. It's also wise to have offline maps downloaded and to keep emergency contact numbers readily accessible.

For Filipino travellers, it's important to know that the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta is the primary diplomatic mission. In case of emergencies, local police and ambulance services are available. It is always recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. Staying informed about any travel advisories from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your trip is also a prudent step.

Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is recommended for easy communication and data access.
