Jieyang Chaoshan Airport (SWA), officially Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport, serves the whole Chaoshan region of eastern Guangdong, China, and is the airport for Shantou. It sits in Jieyang, between the towns of Denggang and Paotai, roughly midway between Jieyang, Shantou and Chaozhou. By road the airport gives about 20 km to Jieyang, 35 to 37 km to Shantou and 31 to 40 km to Chaozhou. Everything happens in one passenger terminal, which handles both domestic and international flights.

The airport is run by Guangdong Airport Authority. You will hear it called Chaoshan Airport, and many travellers simply think of it as Shantou's airport. Passenger terminal (domestic and international)

The single terminal at Jieyang Chaoshan takes all passenger flights. Departures and check-in are on the third floor, and arrivals and baggage claim are on the first floor. The airport's own airline directory lists these carriers:

City check-in at Shantou

Shantou has a city check-in terminal beside Shantou railway station. You can check in, drop your bags and then ride the airport express to SWA without carrying luggage.

Getting to and from Jieyang Chaoshan Airport

Since the airport serves three cities, the main question is which one you are heading for. Journey times below are the airport's own approximate figures, and heavy traffic can add a lot. Fares are shown at the counter or on the meter.

Airport express bus

The airport express bus ticket desk is inside the terminal. Express buses take about 70 minutes to Shantou on the East and West lines, about 80 minutes to Chenghai, and about 60 minutes to Chaozhou or Jieyang old town.

Shuttle to Chaoshan high-speed rail station

A shuttle bus leaves the terminal for Chaoshan high-speed rail station, useful if you are continuing by train. The airport does not give a journey time.

Taxi

Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall, with separate queues for Shantou, Jieyang and Chaozhou taxis, and they are metered. By car, allow about 40 to 42 minutes to Shantou, 20 minutes to Jieyang and 39 to 55 minutes to Chaozhou.

Car rental

Car rental desks are in the first-floor arrivals hall. Driving times match the taxi estimates above.

Parking

The passenger car park is directly in front of the terminal and open round the clock. It has VIP, overnight and short pick-up zones. Rates change, so check them at the entrance.

Facilities at Jieyang Chaoshan Airport

The terminal is compact, and most services are on the departures and arrivals floors.

Chaoshan specialties and gifts

Specialty and gift shops selling Chaoshan products are in the departures hall and the domestic airside area, if you want to take home something local.

Terminal layout

Departures and check-in are on Level 3, with domestic security at the south-west end of the Level 3 hall. Arrivals and baggage claim are on the first floor.

Food and drink

Food outlets are in the departures hall, the domestic airside area, the international airside area and the arrivals hall, so you can eat before or after security.

Lounges

There is a business VIP lounge reached from the departures hall, and a first and business class lounge airside after security. Access depends on your ticket and airline.

Luggage storage

Luggage storage is in the Level 3 departures hall. Lockers are charged by the hour and shelves by the day.

Medical help, assistance and wifi

The airport first-aid centre is on the first floor in domestic arrivals and is staffed 24 hours. A special-assistance counter helps wheelchair users, older travellers and unaccompanied children; book it 24 hours ahead. Airport WiFi and phone charging are also listed among the terminal facilities.

Tips for departing from Jieyang Chaoshan Airport

For domestic flights, airlines require passengers to be at Jieyang Chaoshan 90 minutes before departure. The airport does not state a time for international flights, so follow your airline's advice and allow extra for immigration. Coming from Shantou, the city check-in terminal lets you shed your bags before the bus ride.
