SAI replaced the older Siem Reap International Airport (REP) on 16 October 2023, when all commercial routes transferred over in a single cutover. The new airport sits roughly 40–50 km northeast of Siem Reap city — noticeably farther out than the old airport — with the drive taking around 45–60 minutes via the purpose-built Angkor Highway.
