First the positives - we really liked the set dinner. It was wonderful. The Onsen was nice also. However there were many negatives which is surprising since we have never been disappointed with an Expedia VIP hotel until now. When we checked in, there wasn’t an offer of a welcome drink even though the check in counter was in front of the bar. This was surprising. The room itself was not impressive with paint chips and cracks all over the walls. This was shocking given the amount of $ we paid (nearly $500 for the night total). Interesting we read a review in 2023 saying the same thing ! Believe it. There is nothing in the immediate area. The day we left, we couldn’t get a taxi for hours since the area is so remote. The only solution was to have the hotel shuttle car drop us off at the bus stop in cold, rainy weather. The driver could have taken us to a nearby hotel at a different spot 10 mins away but they didn’t. Really? Lastly it states “no children” yet there were children everywhere! I would not recommend this hotel and Expedia should not be rating it as a 4 Star VIP property. We spent two weeks in Japan and this was by far our worst hotel we stayed at. So many other choices for the money.

From the moment we arrived the service was excellent. The setting is beautiful and the staff are efficient and friendly. This really is a retreat and is very zen-like. The rooms are comfortable and cosy. The food was exceptional and prepared by the chefs in front on you. The onsen was amazing and opening hours to use were great.

This hotel is beautiful! We ended up booking an extra night because we loved the area so much. Hakone is a beautiful town full of nature. It’s so green all around. The hotel has a great bakery coffee area where they hand make their breads. There is a bus stop down the end of the road which takes you everywhere. Not a lot of dining options in the town but the hotel has a great little restaurant.

Our least favourite stay in Japan. They do not prioritize guests for their dining, no one greeted us at check-in (we had to hike in the dark from the road up to reception). The staff were SUPER unhelpful and a bit rude. The walls in the room were peeling. Although it is on a bus route, there is not much transportation here. It was a huge disappointment and I wish we could get a refund and have stayed elsewhere.,

Absolutely beautiful inside and out! Sound of wind in trees, breathtaking views, glorious onsen! Staff could not be nicer or more efficient. Even made me a birthday card! 6 course dinner was incredible! I will be back!

온센을 이용할 수 있어 피로 풀기에 좋았고요.
조식도 종류가 다양하진 않아도 모든 메뉴가 맛있었어요!
아침에 체크 아웃을 한 뒤 카페에서 무료 커피를 즐기며 예쁜 풍경을 바라보는 것도 좋았습니다! 커피 맛있었어요!ㅠ

I strongly recommend Retreat Hakone Före if you want to refresh your body & should for a couple of days. It's an exquisite structure fully surrounded by nature, where you can enjoy all the relax you need.
The staff is awesome, rooms are clean, free coffee and tea at the hotel cafe, and the breakfast buffet...OMG amazing!
Hot springs are also extremely clean and natural.
