When traveling from Malang to Lamongan, passengers have the option to depart from two available stations, namely Malang Station and Lawang Station. Malang Station, which is often referred to as Malang Kotabaru Station, is one of the large class A stations located in Malang City. Established in 1875 during the colonial era, this station was originally functioned to transport crops and plantation products from the interior of East Java to be distributed to various parts of the world through Tanjung Perak Port. Over time, Malang Station has developed into one of the busiest passenger stations in Java by providing 9 train lines connecting various destinations. Its existence is not only a means of transportation, but also has a rich historical value and has become a historical tourist attraction that is attractive to many visitors.
The unique architecture of Malang Station which reflects a combination of neoclassical and colonial styles typical of the railroad company in the Dutch East Indies Staatsspoorwegen is one of the main attractions for tourists who visit it. In addition, the facilities available at this station are also quite complete, ranging from prayer rooms, direction boards, health clinics, to transit hotels and banking services. There are also intermodal facilities such as city buses, taxis, mikrolet, angkot, and ojek that facilitate transportation access to and from the station.
On the other hand, Lawang Station, which was established in 1887, is located at the northeastern tip of Malang, East Java. This station has its own uniqueness as the oldest building in Lawang and the largest station in Malang Regency. With a strategic location right on the edge of the Malang-Surabaya highway, Lawang Station offers a variety of train services, ranging from executive class to economy AC plus. The facilities provided at Lawang Station are also quite adequate, such as parking lots, toilets, prayer rooms, online ticket counters, waiting rooms, and food stalls located to the east of the station.
The presence of Lawang Station is even more attractive because it is supported by popular tourist sites such as Purwodadi Botanical Garden and Wonosari Tea Garden in the vicinity. This makes the station one of the important access points for tourists who want to explore the natural beauty and attractions around Malang Regency.
There are two stations from Malang to Lamongan, Lamongan Station and Babat Station. Lamongan Station, located in Sidokumpul Sub-district, Lamongan is one of the main and most active stations in Lamongan Regency. Besides being the terminus station for the Sulam Commuter Railway, Lamongan Station also serves long-distance trains. The station has four railway lines, of which line number two is used for straight lines, and after 2014, the Babat - Kandangan line became operational, line two is only used for Surabaya destinations. The third line is used for Semarang-bound trains.
After the double-track system became operational, the signaling system at Lamongan Station was changed to an electric signaling system. In 2019, Lamongan Station extended the platform and added an additional canopy to improve passenger comfort. Facilities available at Lamongan Station include public toilets, a mosque, and a waiting room for passengers.
Meanwhile, Babat Station, located in Babat Sub-district, Lamongan Regency, is the westernmost railway station in the Regency. The station used to operate with six train lines, with line three as a straight line towards Surabaya and Semarang - Jakarta. However, after the construction of the double track was completed, Babat Station now has seven lines, where line three is only used as a straight line towards Semarang - Jakarta, and the badug line which was previously line three is used as a new line four for a straight line towards Surabaya.
In addition to the track changes, Babat Station also replaced its signaling system with an electric signaling system. Although it has a history of branch lines to Jombang and Tuban Stations, these lines are no longer in operation. Facilities available at Babat Station include parking lots, an online ticketing system, prayer rooms, toilets, and a smoking area.
Traveling from Malang to Lamongan via train offers an interesting experience with a journey duration of approximately 3 hours 40 minutes. Ticket fares for this trip range from Rp140,000 to Rp165,000, depending on the class and service chosen. The first train from Malang to Lamongan departs at 11:50 am, while the last one departs at 12:14 pm. Although the distance between the two reaches about 133.9 km, the journey is filled with mesmerizing views.
