Miri Town is the second largest city in Sarawak. The city’s development is due to the richness of the district with natural resources, especially petroleum. Miri Town exists due to the emergence of the first oil and natural gas industry in 1910 at Bukit Telaga Minyak, Canada Hill, Miri. Miri gets its name from the Miriek tribe who are the original residents since the 16th century. The Europeans who came to seek and discover oil in the city accidentally changed Miriek’s name to Miri. The name Miri remains until today.
There are flights to Miri provided by Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia. From the airport, guests may hail up a taxi to reach Miri Town.
Miri Town may be linked to other towns in Sarawak, connecting road from Sabah through Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei, sequentially to Baram and Limbang or using Pan Borneo Highway that linked the roads from Bintulu via Batu Niah.
The main bus terminal is the Miri Sentral that serves long distance destination to Brunei, Sabah and West Kalimantan.
Canada Hill is a limestone ridge overlooking Miri Town and offering excellent views of Miri Town and its Surroundings. The Grand Old Lady is located on top of Canada Hill featuring the first oil well in the country. This well represents the petroleum history of Miri and has been declared a protected historical site by the Sarawak Government. It was one of the very few structures that was spared from the bombing attacks of World War II. Next to the well is the Petroleum Science Museum.
Brighton Beach is an ideal spot for watching the sunset. It is the Miri Town’s oldest recreational park. Two beautiful piers extend to the ocean and offers excellent views of the coastline and the nearby Miri Marina’s seahorse lighthouse whereby the seahorse is the city emblem of Miri.
The Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park is a popular dive destination, lying at depths ranging from 7 to 30 metres having an average visibility of 10 to 30 meteres. There are also some wreck dives. The nearest dive site is about ten minutes from the marina bay jetty. Local dive operators do offer certification programme.
Loagan Bunut National Park boasts a unique ecosystem based on the Sarawak’s largest natural lake. When the lake is dry, plants sprout from the mud and are eaten by the insect larvae. When the rain comes and the lake fills up, returning fish feed on the larvae, breed in the lake and the whole cycle starts again. As the water level subsides, huge flocks of wading birds gorge on fish and other aquatic creatures. The park is a birdwatching paradise since it houses many species of permanent residents such as eagles, swallows, malkohas, stork-billed kingfishers, magpies, robins, doves, bulbuls, racket-tailed drongos, pied hornbills, wild darters, egrets, herons, bitterns and others.
Tamu Muhibbah is located opposite the central bus station in Miri. It is a colourful native market where a range of exotic fruits and vegetables, handicrafts and produce from upriver areas such as the Bario rice can be found.
