Beras Terbakar (Field of Burnt Rice) which is located in Padang Matsirat is one of the historical sites that can be visited if you are in Langkawi. The burnt rice is believed to be associated with the curse of the legend Mahsuri, a woman who was murdered and mistreated. Before Mahsuri died, she had sworn that Langkawi will not be a peace and prosperity land for seven generations. Legend has it that the rice burning incident occurred soon after Mahsuri was killed.
Under Datuk Kerma Jaya, the Siamese invaded Langkawi. Due to the fear of losing, he ordered that all the rice grown was kept underground for security purpose. When Datuk Kerma Jaya had really lost the battle, all the stored rice were burnt.
Visitors can witness the site of the incident and the charred rice stored in a glass container. This place is quite interesting as it is located in a residential area.
