Initally a small Fokker airfield, Sultan Azlan Shah Airport was expanded in the 1980s to accommodate jet aircraft operations. In 1989, when Queen Elizabeth II's visit to the Royal Town of Kuala Kangsar the then new airport terminal was prepared. When the North-South Expressway opened, many people started using cars and Malaysia Airlines followed by Air Asia stopped their services, thus making the airport hard to maintain. This was followed by the introduction of the Electric Train Service (ETS) which connects Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh city in approximately 2 hours. On 2013, after the completion of runway extension, it was declared unsafe. The upgrading works began in April 2011 and finished in November 2012. The old terminal was destroyed and a new modern terminal was built. The runway was further extended by 200m to accommodate the B737 and A320 aircrafts. Today, the new terminal is wider and more spacious, fully air-conditioned for the comfort of passengers.
