AirAsia is one of the world’s leading Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) headquartered in Malaysia. It is the pioneer of Full-LCC in Indonesia, having the main characteristics as follows: add-on facilities purchasable during online booking like checked baggage, pre-reserved meal and seat selection. This aims to provide affordable flight fare to its customers.
AirAsia has a number of subsidiaries. Two of the well-known ones in Southeast Asia are Thai AirAsia and Philippines AirAsia. Besides its main hub in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia AirAsia opened secondary hub in Johor Bahru, fyling to destinations like Singapore, Phuket and Bangkok.
As one of the affiliates of AirAsia International, AirAsia Indonesia (QZ) serves domestic and international routes in/from Indonesia. AirAsia Indonesia began operating in year 2004 from Soekarno-Hatta headquarter. Both domestic and international flights operate at Terminal 2 Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
Numerous awards have been achieved under Tony Fernandes’ leadership. AirAsia Indonesia is listed in Category 1 for flight safety. For four years in a row, AirAsia achieves Skytrax’s World’s Best LCC.
Up to 2005, AirAsia Indonesia targets to operate 34 units of Airbus. As a result of high-standard maintenance, no plane older than 3 years are still operating due to fuel efficiency.
One of the airline’s strategies is to offer promo fares. Two of Air Asia’s popular promos are Promo Karnaval 2 Juta Kursi (Carnaval Promo for 2 Million Seats), Promo Kursi Gratis (Free Seat Promo), besides the weekly ones. The promo offers both domestic and favorite international destinations such as Thailand and Singapore. Air Asia’s low price fare lives up to the airline’s favored slogan “Now Everyone Can Fly”.
In Indonesia, AirAsia also pioneers the method of online booking. Online booking results in lower operational cost and hence, low flight fare. Using online booking system, people may book anywere and anytime. This method is then followed by the other local airlines.

Established in 1993, AirAsia belonged to a state-owned DRB-HICOM. Its Boeing 737 served the initial flight in 1996. Already in that era, Malaysia has had an advanced aviation industry, labelling AirAsia as the first generation facing a highly competitive challenge.
Due to an unsolved debt (40 million RM), DRB-HICOM sold AirAsia on December 2, 2001. TimeWarner’s former senior official Tony Fernandes purchased AirAsia for 1 RM. Tony Fernandes then set new strategies through total rebranding. Within only a year, AirAsia successfully gained profit, establishing its strong position as the Southeast Asia’s first LCC.
Extending its network outside Malaysia, AirAsia opened a number of affiliates abroad. In 2003, Thai AirAsia (FD/AIQ) was born. In Indonesia, it acquired Awair and did a total change to become Indonesia AirAsia (QZ/AWQ) a year later.
Cheap long-haul flights such as from Kuala Lumpur to cities in Australia, Europe, Japan and South Korea were introduced. These flights use Airbus A-330 and operates under the name AirAsia X. Offering competitive low fare, AirAsia X also flies to destinations like Tokyo, London and Gold Coast.
By purchasing 40 units of Airbus A-320 in 2005, AirAsia’s popularity increased in international scale. These new aircrafts started to substitute the old Boeing 737-300s. AirAsia Malaysia went through total rejuvenation by replacing their FD to QZ’s Boeing 737-300s with A320s.
AirAsia Indonesia once focused its strategy to domestic routes. It began to open routes not yet served by other airlines like Pekanbaru-Medan, Bandung-Medan and Denpasar-Darwin. It was welcomed enthusiastically by the public.
Recently in 2010, AirAsia strengthened its position in the Philippine by establishing Philippines AirAsia. It is a result of partnership between Philippine’s investors and AirAsia International Ltd. Two years later, Philippines AirAsia began its operation and gained the certified rights to fully serve in the Philippines airspace.
The uniform emphasizes on the prominent colour red. AirAsia female flight attendant wears a stylish combination of white blouse, red blazer and above-knee-length skirt of the same colour as the logo. Meanwhile, the male attendant dresses elegantly in black outfit.
As the standard of a Full-LCC, AirAsia does not serve free meal/drinks.
