The airport is about 16 km (10 miles) south of Downtown Atlanta. The drive is usually short outside rush hour, and MARTA trains also connect the airport with the city centre.
ATL has two terminals. The Domestic Terminal is on the west side and the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal is on the east side, with concourses T and A to F between them.
The Plane Train, an automated underground people mover, links both terminals with all seven concourses. You can also use the underground walkway if you have time.
Yes. MARTA's Airport station is inside the Domestic Terminal and is served by the Red and Gold lines, which run into Downtown Atlanta and further north.
Delta Air Lines operates a major hub at Atlanta. Many other domestic and international airlines also use the airport.
Rental companies operate from the Rental Car Center. Reach it on the ATL SkyTrain from the Domestic Terminal.
ATL is the airport's IATA code. The name honours two former Atlanta mayors, William B. Hartsfield and Maynard H. Jackson Jr.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, known by its code ATL, is the main air gateway for Atlanta and the wider state of Georgia in the United States. The airport grew from an airfield founded in the 1920s, and it now carries the names of two former Atlanta mayors, William B. Hartsfield and Maynard H. Jackson Jr.
It handles a very large number of domestic and international flights every day. For travellers, that means plenty of choice, and also a big site where a little planning goes a long way.
ATL lies about 16 km (10 miles) south of Downtown Atlanta. The airport grounds straddle Clayton and Fulton counties, close to the main interstate highways that run into the city.
The layout is easy to follow once you know the pattern. There are two terminals:
Between them sit seven concourses in a row: T, A, B, C, D, E and F. An underground automated train, the Plane Train, links the terminals and every concourse. There is also a walkway beneath the concourses for those who prefer to stroll.
Delta Air Lines runs a major hub at Atlanta, so a big share of departures carry the Delta name. Many other US and international carriers also fly here, which makes ATL a common connecting point between cities across the Americas and beyond. Routes and frequencies change through the year, so check the current schedule when you plan.
Public transport is simple here. MARTA, the city's rail network, has its Airport station inside the Domestic Terminal, served by the Red and Gold lines. Trains run north to Downtown, Midtown and beyond.
Taxis, ride-hailing cars and shuttle services pick up at marked zones outside the terminals. If you are hiring a car, the ATL SkyTrain carries you from the Domestic Terminal to the Rental Car Center, where the main rental companies share one building.
Downtown Atlanta is a short rail ride away. Visitors often head for Centennial Olympic Park and the attractions clustered around it, while Midtown is known for its arts venues and green spaces.
