Bicol International Airport (DRP) is the main airport for Legazpi and the province of Albay in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. It opened in 2021, replacing the old Legazpi Airport, and was built on a plateau with views of Mayon Volcano, which has earned it the nickname of the country's most scenic gateway.
The airport is in the municipality of Daraga, next to Legazpi City, about 15 km from the city. With light traffic, the ride into Legazpi is a short one. Mayon Volcano rises about 15 km from the airport, and on clear days its near-perfect cone dominates the view from the apron.
The two-level terminal is modern and bright, with self-service kiosks, multiple check-in counters and waiting areas looking out towards the volcano. A single 2,500-metre runway serves the airport, which is sized for narrow-body jets.
DRP currently handles domestic flights only. Philippine Airlines, through PAL Express, and Cebu Pacific connect the airport with Manila, which is by far its busiest route. Cebgo, part of the Cebu Pacific group, has flown to Cebu and other Visayas cities. For international trips, connect through Manila or Cebu.
Tricycles wait outside the terminal for the short trip into town, and taxis are available too. Air-conditioned vans run shared transfers towards central Legazpi, leaving once they fill up. If you are staying at a hotel near the airport, ask whether it offers a pick-up.
The Cagsawa Ruins in Daraga, the remains of a church buried by an eruption of Mayon, are among the most photographed sights in the region. Ligñon Hill in Legazpi gives a close-up view of the volcano, and ATV tours run along Mayon's lower slopes. Further afield, Donsol in neighbouring Sorsogon is known for seasonal whale shark watching.
Book a window seat on the side facing Mayon for a memorable view on take-off and landing. The Bicol Region is prone to typhoons, so check your flight status in the rainy season. Mayon is an active volcano, and flights can be affected when it is restless.
