About Soekarno-Hatta International Airport

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) is the main air gateway to Jakarta and the busiest airport in Indonesia. It carries the names of the country's first president and vice president, Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta. Locals often shorten it to "Soetta", and you will also see it called Jakarta Cengkareng Airport after the district nearby.

The airport started domestic operations in 1985. Its original terminals were designed by French architect Paul Andreu, who blended Javanese-style pavilion roofs with tropical gardens, a design that won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

Where the Jakarta airport is located

CGK sits in Tangerang, Banten, roughly 20 km northwest of central Jakarta. A toll road links the airport to the city, but traffic around the capital can be heavy, so allow plenty of time for the drive.

Terminals and facilities at Soekarno-Hatta

There are three passenger terminals:

• Terminal 1, the original building, split into sub-terminals 1A, 1B and 1C.
• Terminal 2, with sub-terminals 2D, 2E and 2F, used by a mix of carriers including low-cost airlines.
• Terminal 3, the newest and largest, a modern glass-and-steel building used by Garuda Indonesia and many international airlines.

A free automated people mover, the Skytrain, connects all three terminals with the airport railway station. Terminal assignments can change, so check the terminal shown on your booking before you travel.

CGK is the home base of Garuda Indonesia and a major base for many Indonesian carriers, including Citilink, Batik Air, Lion Air, Indonesia AirAsia and Super Air Jet. Dozens of foreign airlines also fly here, so the airport offers both an extensive domestic network across the archipelago and international routes across Asia and beyond.

Getting from Soekarno-Hatta to Jakarta

The airport train is the most predictable way into the city. It runs from the airport station to central Jakarta, stopping at BNI City near Sudirman and ending at Manggarai, where you can change to commuter lines. DAMRI airport buses serve many points in Jakarta and nearby cities such as Bogor and Bekasi. Metered taxis and app-based ride-hailing pick up at designated points outside each terminal.

Things to see around Jakarta

Once in the city, many travellers head for the National Monument (Monas), the Dutch colonial quarter of Kota Tua, and the shopping districts around Sudirman and Thamrin. The Thousand Islands off the Jakarta coast make an easy escape by boat.

Road traffic is the biggest variable at CGK. Leave early, especially on weekday afternoons and before public holidays, or take the train to avoid delays. If you are connecting between terminals, give yourself time for the Skytrain and a new security check.
