Airports of Thailand advises arriving at Chiang Mai International Airport at least two hours before departure. Allow extra time during peak travel seasons and festivals.
Chiang Mai Airport has two passenger terminals. One handles domestic flights and the other handles international flights, so check which one your flight uses before you set off.
Chiang Mai Airport is only a few kilometres from the Old City. The drive normally takes 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic.
The airport opened in 1934 as Suthep Airport. It took its name from the Suthep area and the nearby mountain of Doi Suthep.
Airlines flying from Chiang Mai International Airport to Bangkok include Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai Vietjet. Some use Suvarnabhumi and others use Don Mueang, so check the arrival airport when you book.
Yes. Chiang Mai City Bus routes stop at the airport and run to areas such as the Old City, Tha Phae Gate, the Night Bazaar and MAYA mall. Red songthaew trucks and airport taxis are other options.
Yes. Chiang Mai International Airport has an international terminal with flights to destinations around Asia. Routes and frequencies change by season, so search your dates on Traveloka to see what is available.
Chiang Mai International Airport is operated by Airports of Thailand (AOT), the company that also runs Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and Phuket airports.
Chiang Mai International Airport is the main air gateway to northern Thailand and one of the busiest airports in the country. Its roots go back a long way. It started operating in 1934 as Suthep Airport, named after the district and the mountain that overlooks the city. Today it is run by Airports of Thailand (AOT) and handles a steady stream of domestic and international flights.
Few airports sit this close to a city centre. CNX is only a few kilometres from the moated Old City, and the drive usually takes 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Nimmanhaemin Road, the café and shopping district, is just as near.
The airport has separate domestic and international terminals, with food outlets, shops and car rental counters on site. A single 3,100-metre runway serves all flights. Because the airport is so close to town, it can get busy at peak times, so give yourself enough time for check-in and security.
Bangkok is the busiest route by far, with flights to both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports. Carriers including Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai Vietjet serve Chiang Mai. You can also find direct flights to other Thai cities and international services to destinations around Asia, which vary by season.
Inside the Old City walls you'll find centuries-old temples such as Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh. Doi Suthep, the mountain temple that gave the original airport its name, looks down on the city from the west. After dark, the Night Bazaar and the weekend walking streets are popular for food and handicrafts.
AOT recommends reaching the airport at least two hours before your flight. Traffic in Chiang Mai can build up at rush hour, even over short distances, so leave a little extra time. During festival periods such as Yi Peng and Songkran, flights fill quickly, so book early.
