Butuan is also known as the “Timber Capital of the Philippines” and prides itself in having industries way before Magellan set foot in the country. Many people say that Butuan was born before the Philippines was recognized globally. Butuan is a highly urbanized City located in Agusan Del Norte, in Northern Mindanao. It is the former provincial capital of Agusan Del Norte. Butuan City is also the home of the balanghais (large boat) that were excavated in the mid-'70s and are believed to have been used as early 320AD. Agusan del Norte is famous for its crystal clear water, verdant landscapes, captivating caves, pear-shaped lake, and waterfalls. Butuan City also serves as a getaway to other parts of the province.
Butuan is a lively city famous for its festivals. In January, the Kahimunan Festival is celebrated in honour of the city patron Sr. Sto. Niño. The month of May marks the celebration of the Balangay Festival and the Butwaan Festival, both of which salute the feast of St. Joseph. Finally, Butuan commemorates their culture through the Abayan Festival and Unaw Festival in June and the Palagsing Festival and Adlaw Hong Butuan in August. Prices for hotels and flights are more expensive during the festival month and accommodations will mostly be booked. Travellers are advised to book accommodations a couple of months in advance to secure accommodations during the festival.
Bancasi Airport – This airport serves the general area of the city of Butuan. It is located in the province of Agusan del Norte. It is the only airport in the region and the largest in Caraga. The airport is located just off the highway to Cagayan de Oro, about 6 km west of the city centre. Both Cebu Pacific and PAL Express operate several daily flights from Manila to Bancasi Airport.
Calbayog Airport – This airport serves the general area of Calbayog and is located in the province of Samar in the Philippines. Both Philippine Airlines (PAL) and Cebu Pacific Air (CEB) provides services to this airport with daily flights to and from Manila.
Butuan enjoys a tropical climate all year round, which allows travellers to visit at any time. However, the best time to visit climate-wise is from February to October as the temperates range at a comfortable 21 to 33˚C. However, this is also considered as the peak season to visit Butuan city.
