Welcome to the land where nature stands hand in hand with modern infrastructure and lifestyle. Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia and so far, one of the most exotic state too. Also described as Borneo’s “Hidden Paradise”, Sarawak’s rainforest (which is almost the size of Austria) houses the world’s richest and most diverse eco-system. Known also as the “Land of Hornbills”, Sarawak is also the home to the world’s largest flower, Rafflesia (which is just as big as a coffee table), snakes and squirrels that fly, deer the size of cats, insects eating plants and a huge number of other species of flora and fauna that are just waiting to be discovered.
It is situated northwest on the wild island of Borneo with strong primeval forces and tribal traditions that still resonates in every corner of Sarawak, from the traditional longhouses to the vibrant rivers that runs through the beautiful, thick rainforest. Being endowed with the world’s richest and most diverse ecosystem, Sarawak is also home to 27 different ethnic groups each with its own language and culture.
Being in the east of Malaysia, the main means of transportation to reach Sarawak from the Peninsular is the airplane. It is well connected domestically and internationally with the largest hub being in Kuching, (Kuching International Airport), it usually takes about an hour and a half from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu. Main international flights are usually from Indonesia, Brunei, Macau and Singapore.
Sarawak has land borders with Brunei, Indonesia and Sabah. Depending on where you would like to go in Sarawak, tourists can hop on express busses that brings them straight to their destination of choice.
Semenggoh Nature Reserve
For more than 20 years, the wardens here in Semenggoh Nature Reserve have taken care and trained young orangutans who are either orphaned or rescued from captivity and teach them how to survive in the wild. One of the best time to visit this reserve is during the morning and afternoon feeding sessions where you might be able to see semi-wind orangutans returning to the centre for a free meal which happen between 9am to 10a, and 3pm to 3.30pm.
Sarawak Cultural Village
If you want to see everything of Sarawak, then the Cultural Village is the place to be. “See Sarawak in Half a Day” is the claim made by this village, a unique award-winning living museum offering an excellent introduction to local cultures and lifestyles. Visitors can explore the beautiful made replica buildings that represents every major ethnic group in Sarawak - Bidayuh, Iban, and Orang Ulu longhouses, a Penan jungle settlement, a Melanau tall-house, a Malay town house with adjacent top-spinning court, a Chinese farm House and a Chinese pagoda. Each building has a “storyteller” who is expert in describing and interpreting traditional cultures and lifestyles.
Talang-Satang National Park
This national park that covers the coastline and islands of Pulau Talang-Talang Besar and Pulau Talang-Talang Kecil (located off Sematan), and Pulau Satang Besar and Pulau Satang Kecil (located off Santubong) is to enhance the marine turtle conservation in Sarawak. These small islands are surrounded by patches of shallow coral reef which provide shelter and resting grounds for sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs. Three of the islands in the park – Talang Talang Besar, Talang Talang Kecil and Satang Besar – are known as Sarawak’s “Turtle Islands.”
During the peak turtle nesting season (May – September), park wardens monitor the beaches for turtle landings, remove eggs from the nests and place them in the hatcheries. After 40 to 60 days incubation, the young hatchlings are released and scamper across the beach to the sea.
