About Tasmania accommodation

About Tasmania accommodation

Tasmania is epic Australia at its best - but a million miles away from the stereotypes of red deserts and Bondi Beach. Think wild coastlines, alpine hikes, and small towns with big character. One moment you’ll be walking amongst Hobart’s art galleries and bakeries, the next you’ll be tramping with laden packs past glacial lakes.

Whether you're road-tripping for the best scallop pie, slowing down and smelling that fresh air, or simply looking up to those night skies filled with stars, there’s a bed to suit. From beach shacks and cosy B&Bs to luxe eco-lodges in the bush, it won't be hard to discover a place in Tassie.

Where to stay in Tasmania

  • Hobart: The capital’s blend of sandstone charm and sea-salt edge makes it perfect for first-timers. Think Salamanca Market mornings, MONA afternoons, and stays from historic pubs to slick apartments.
  • Launceston: Tasmania’s north brings heritage and harvest together. You’re close to Cataract Gorge, wine trails, and weekly farmers' markets. Stay here if you want city comforts with countryside charm.
  • Freycinet Peninsula: Home to Wineglass Bay and pink-granite peaks. This is where luxury lodges meet beachy eco-stays. Great for couples, photographers and anyone keen to soak in the view.
  • Cradle Mountain: A wilderness icon. Wake to misty mornings and wombats out front. You’ll find everything from glamping pods to cabins complete with cosy fireplaces - perfect for warming up frosty fingers, post-hike.
  • Bruny Island: A ferry ride away, but worth the hop. Think dramatic coastlines, oyster shacks and off-grid retreats where the skies go full galaxy. Best for nature lovers and slow travellers.

How much is Tasmania accommodation?

Tasmania caters to every kind of wallet, whether its owners are road-tripping backpackers or couples happy to splurge on wilderness luxury. While premium stays in remote locations can come with a higher price tag, affordable options aren’t hard to find, especially around major towns or in shoulder season. Expect an average nightly cost of around AU$170.

  • Backpackers and budget hotels: From AU$50 per night. Hostels in Hobart or Launceston, and basic motels along the East Coast are popular with solo travellers and vanlifers.
  • Apartments and motels: From AU$120 per night. Self-contained units near Cradle Mountain or Freycinet offer space, kitchens and great value for families or groups.
  • Mid-range hotels: From AU$180 per night. Think historic inns in Hobart, or vineyard-adjacent stays in the Tamar Valley with creature comforts and charm.
  • Luxury lodges and eco-resorts: From AU$300 per night. Top-tier retreats like Saffire Freycinet or Pumphouse Point come with Tassie’s finest fine dining experiences, and guided hikes that take you through some serious scenery.

Top-rated hotels in Tasmania

  • MACq 01 Hotel, Hobart: History with swagger. Set on the waterfront, this storytelling hotel spins Tasmania’s past into plush suites and moody corners. Steps from the ferry, but a world away.
  • Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge: A four-star stay in alpine country. Think wombats at your doorstep and hot tubs after the hike. Cosy cabins, crackling fires and nature right outside.
  • The Henry Jones Art Hotel: Where jam once simmered, now it’s Tasmanian art on heritage walls. The vibe is industrial-chic meets gallery crawl—ideal for creative types and couples.
  • Stillwater Seven, Launceston: Seven rooms. One river. And one of Tassie’s top restaurants below. Stay here if you want wine by the water and next-level hospitality.

Tips for finding the perfect accommodation in Tasmania

  • Use the filters to skip the scroll: After a hot tub under the stars? Or a cabin with a kitchen? Use Traveloka’s filters to cut through the noise and find your stay fast.
  • Know when to book: Tassie fills fast over summer and public holidays. Book ahead for Freycinet or Cradle Mountain, but shoulder seasons often bring sweet deals and fewer crowds.
  • Location matters - kind of: Hobart is walkable and buzzy. Bruny is wild and remote. Figure out your trip pace first, then pick your base. No wrong answers, just different vibes.
  • Think outside the usual: Fancy a vineyard cottage? Glamping with wombats? Look beyond the hotel tab: Tassie’s full of stays that surprise.

Best Western Hobart
The staff were fantastic and the location of the property was great. Unfortunately, the family room was slightly dated. The door to the balcony could not be locked so and the air conditioning constantly made a rattling noise. All in all, we had a good experience and would probably come back again.

Our stay was comfortable and we were greeted nicely at reception. Rooms are dated but served the purpose. The water had a bad taste. Maybe due to the dry conditions, it had been trucked in.

On arrival the young lady at reception followed us out to our car and helped carry our luggage to our room! Such a thoughtful gesture, and all with a smile.
