Besides being the capital of East Kotawaringin Regency, Sampit is also one of the oldest residential areas in the district. Judging from its history, the name of this city is said to be in the Kakawin Nagarakertagama Kakawin written in 1365.

Mentaya River is one of the main rivers in Sampit City. Nowadays, the East Kotawaringin Regency Government is promoting the potential of Mentaya River Landscape Tourism. Tourists will be invited to go along the river riding the traditional Kelotok boat from the Habaring Hurung Pier and crossing several iconic attractions such as the Jelawat Statue, Sampit Harbor, H. Asan Sampit Airport, City Sagonta Forest, Wood Carving Craft Center, and Pelangsian Village Market.
