Tarakan refers to the name of the largest city in North Kalimantan Province (Kaltara). Geographically, Tarakan City is located within the Tarakan Island area which is on the north side of Kaltara.
In addition, Tarakan is also listed as number 17 richest city in Indonesia, with the economic movement dominated by the oil, fisheries and forestry industries. It was also influenced by the historical setting of the city which had been the main area of oil production in the Dutch colonial era.
Tarakan City's infrastructure is fairly advanced. The city has a large port as its link with cities in the eastern part of Kalimantan, Sulawesi Island, Java Island, and Sabah. The connection between cities can be through Juwata International Airport, which is about 3.5 kilometers from the city center. This semicircular house is a historical site that used to be the place of residence of the Australian Army when it wanted to seize power from the hands of Japanese during World War II. At present, this 6 x 12 meter house has become a museum that holds various historical collections, especially war equipment and World War II documentation photos at Tarakan. The place is very easy to find because it is located next to the Tarakan City DPRD Office.

Cultural heritage in the hilly coastal area is one of the hundreds of ex-World War II bunker locations in Tarakan. This open-air museum is crowded with tourists who want to see the cannons, logistics warehouse, and Dutch bunkers. It is said that there are 200 bunkers in one area of the Peningki Lama cultural site which covers 6 hectares. However, so far less than half have been found.
