Apart from Java island, rail transportation is also used by people on the Sumatra island. The majority of them live in the Medan area and its surroundings with various passenger trains.
One of them is the Sri Lelawangsa train which serves the Kualanamu - Aras Kabu - Batang Kuis - Bandar Khalipah - Medan - Binjai - Kuala Bingai route. The train first operated on March 6, 2010 with the initial route being Medan - Binjai and vice versa.
The use of Sri Lelawangsa is increasingly needed by the community so that on January 5, 2022, the route was extended to Kualanamu and Kuala Bingai. Then on September 1, 2023, the management of the Sri Lelawangsa train will no longer be with the Indonesian Railways, but will move to KAI Airport.
The Sri Lelawangsa train first operated at Tambang Langkat Station on the Medan Binjai route. Now the station is known as Binjai Station which is located on Jl. Whale, East Binjai. This station, which is included in Regional Division I of North Sumatra and Aceh, is a class II train station.
Since it was built during the colonial era, the architecture of Binjai Station has not changed much with the same function. There are three train lines that are still active, including the Sri Lelawangsa train, known as the Binjai train. The supporting facilities at the station are also quite complete, including counters, queue chairs and the station head's room.
The Sri Lelawangsa train has an Executive class on the Kualanamu - Medan route and a Premium Economy class on the Medan - Kuala Bingai route. Passengers can choose from 80 seats in each carriage arranged 2-2 facing each other. Even though the destination station is close, this train is equipped with reclining and revolving seats.
