Information About Manggarai Station

Manggarai Station is located in South Jakarta, close to the city center. It was built by Dutch architect Ir. J. Van Gendt and construction began in 1914. After four years, on May 1, 1918, the station was officially inaugurated.

Initially, the station was part of the Jakarta-Bogor railway line, managed by the private company Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NISM). In 1913, the state-owned railway company Staatsspoorwegen (SS) purchased the Jakarta-Bogor line from NISM and reorganized the railway lines in Jakarta, which included the construction of Manggarai Station.

Once passengers arrive at the station, they can continue their journey using other public transportation options like the Commuter Line, BRT Trans Metro, or shuttles. Unique Facts About Manggarai Station

1. Has a 100 Year Old Platform

Although officially inaugurated on May 1, 1918, Manggarai Station was not fully completed then. Due to a shortage of steel during World War I, the originally planned steel platform had to be replaced with teak wood. Two wooden platforms, which still exist today, are located on track 1 and track 2 towards Jakarta Kota, Bekasi, and Cikarang.

2. Witness to an Important Event for the Republic of Indonesia

Manggarai Station holds significant historical value as the starting point of the temporary capital relocation from Jakarta to Yogyakarta on January 4, 1946. It was at this station that all secret preparations for the journey of President Soekarno and Vice President Mohammad Hatta were carried out.

3. General Soedirman’s Resting Place During Ceasefire Negotiations

Manggarai Station was a resting place for the Great Commander General Soedirman on his way to the ceasefire negotiations in Jakarta. The arrival of General Soedirman and his entourage on November 1, 1946, was greeted with cheers by the Indonesian people.
