A railway line linking the Duri region to Serang via Tangerang and Cikande was planned in the 1890s by the Staatsspoorwegen (SS) railway company. The primary objective of this project is to enhance passenger movement between Batavia and the Banten region, thereby facilitating seamless and efficient transit over the proposed railway line.
The current station building is a modern transfer station and is not an authentic construction from the Staatsspoorwegen era. The original structure of Merak Station included a wooden canopy and was situated in close proximity to the sea and dock. It is believed that this canopy was demolished during the period of independence. The building formerly included turntables and a branch line leading to Indah Kiat Harbor for transporting pulp trains. However, these facilities have been dismantled and no longer exist.
The former station structure was dismantled in the late 1980s to accommodate the construction of the ferry terminal, which currently serves as the ASDP Merak Harbor office. Previously, there used to be a Rangkamila Bus Stop and a Tegalwangi Bus Stop between Merak Station and Krentjeng (Krenceng) Station. However, both bus stops are currently inactive.
