The Manggarai railway, with a proud history dating back to the 17th century, was originally a home and a slave market of the Manggarai origin, Flores, in the Manggarai Region of Batavia (Jakarta). In 1913, the Staatsspoorwegen took over and rearranged, then officialized the Manggarai Station on 1 May 1918.

Built by the Dutch architect, Ir. J. Van Gendt, the stationholds significant historical value as the starting point of the temporary capital relocation in 1946. Manggarai Station also witnessed the arrival of Great Commander General Soedirman in November 1, 1946, welcomed with glory by the Indonesian people.
