The Siantar Express Train

The Siantar Express Train more familiar known as Sireks is PT Kereta Api Indonesia service for local trips from Medan to Pematang Siantar or from Pematang to Siantar. This train operates to replace The Dolok Martimbang Train which the journey had removed.

In 2013, PT KAI Divre 1 changed the Sireks Train trip from twice a day to once a day on a round trip. The Sireks Train operates twice a day. First, at 06.40 WIB from Siantar Station to Medan Station. Second, at 12.05 WIB from Medan Station to Siantar Station.

In October 2023, the Siantar Express Train departure schedule will be updated twice a day or four times on a round trip. This is as stated in the Decree of the General of Railways Number KP-DPJKA 68 YEAR 2023 regarding the Graphic of Train Travel on the National Railway Network in Northern Sumatera in 2023.

According to Anwar Solikhin, Public Relations Manager KAI Divre 1 Northern Sumatera, this increased number of trips is a manifestation of commitment to KAI to improve service for customers. Travel needs increasing and KAI provides a solution.

Class Availability

The Siantar Express Train is a local train that offers Economy class. On each trip, this train only runs 4 passenger train carriages pulled by BB203 and CC201 locomotives. The capacity of this train is 318 passengers with an occupancy of 120 per cent. 

The seating arrangement on the Sireks Train is 3-2 (ABC-DE). The seat arranges face to face and can’t be reclined or swivelled.  For the price, this local train charges a flat fare of IDR 22.000.

Meanwhile, for the route itself, the Sireks Train will serve passengers up and down at the following stations; Medan-Bandar Khalipah-Batangkuis-Araskabu-Lubuk Pakam-Perbaungan-Rampah-Tebing Tinggi-Baja Linggei-Dolok Merangir-Siantar.

The Siantar Express Train travels from Siantar-Medan and Medan-Siantar for a distance of 124 km. This distance can be completed in approximately 4 hours with a speed of 50-60 km. Along the journey, passengers will be shown the beauty of oil palm plantations, rubber, and other green panoramas.

For those who plan to go to Lake Toba, the Siantar Express Train is also becoming one of the mainstays. How could it not be, that the route already passes through Lubuk Pakam and Tebing Tinggi? So, it will be very close if you plan to go on holiday or explore Lake Toba. PT KAI in the future, will open a direct route from Medan-Lake Toba.

The class offered by the Siantar Express Train is only economy. Even so, the facilities offered are sufficient to make the trip comfortable. Some examples of public facilities offered include power outlets, AC, toilets, no smoking rooms in various areas, and many more. 

The seats offered are made of leather. And each side be equipped with two sockets and also a small table on the side of the window. Apart from that, it’s also equipped with a luggage area at the top of the seat. The trunk area can used to store bags and other luggage.
