The Tegal Arum train, which used to travel between Tegal and Pasar Senen via the northern route of Java, is one of the best options in the economy train category. Known as a train that rarely experiences delays, Tegal Arum was originally part of the Gunung Jati railway, which had previously used KRDs. The Tegal Arum train operates only once a day.
On April 4, 2016, the Tegal Arum train service was terminated, and the train was converted to support the operation of the Tawang Jaya train on the Semarang-Jakarta round-trip route. With the end of the Tegal Arum train operation, the Tegal Ekspres train became the primary alternative for economy-class travel between Jakarta and Tegal. This train departs from Pasar Senen Station in the morning and Tegal Station in the afternoon.
The Tegal Arum train provides one class, the AC economy class. Like other train classes, this class has 106 seats in a 2-2 and 3-3 arrangement facing each other. Economy-class amenities include air conditioning and power outlets, ensuring you stay connected to your electronic devices. In addition, this class is equipped with clean toilets and storage areas for your luggage.

In 2016, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) terminated the operation of the Tegal Arum train. This decision was made because the train series would be used to support the Tawang Jaya train which was planned to operate with a long series of 14 economy class passenger trains (K3) starting the same day.
The termination of Tegal Arum train operation caused disappointment, especially considering that the train was the main choice for the people of Tegal, Cirebon, Indramayu, and Subang who wanted to go to Jakarta.
This sentiment is further supported by the occupancy rate that is always full every day, even on weekdays. The right departure time is one of the reasons why this train is always in demand, coupled with affordable ticket prices.
Although there are other alternative trains to Tegal from Jakarta, such as Tegal Ekspres and Tegal Bahari, Tegal Arum remains a favorite choice for its loyal passengers.
Tegal Arum train was originally a part of Gunung Jati train. Initially, the facilities from Tegal used a series of diesel railroad trains (KRD) manufactured by Nippon Sharyo. However, transitioned to an Economy class train hauled by a locomotive.
In the 2000s, Tegal Arum trains could accommodate 10 to 11 Economy class passenger trains and 1 dining carriage in one series, and eventually settled on a configuration of 8 Economy class passenger cars.
Economy trains refer to a class of passenger trains below business class in Indonesian Railways services. As with the business and executive classes, Tegal Arum economy trains are equipped with air-conditioning facilities. With a lower passenger capacity, this AC economy train provides a more spacious and comfortable travel experience when compared to conventional economy trains.
During its operational period before it was terminated, the Tegal Arum train operated one daily trip. The departure schedule from Pasar Senen was at 04:30 PM, while the departure from Tegal was at 06:25 AM.
