About Bangkok accommodation

About Bangkok

Having the nickname of “Krung Thep” in Thai which translated into “the City of Angel”, Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and the most populous city in the country. The city is located in the Chao Phraya River delta in central Thailand and covers an area of about 1,569 square kilometers (605 square miles). As the capital city, Bangkok is the political heart of Thailand, housing the monarchy, government offices, and foreign embassies. Bangkok is also Thailand's economic engine, contributing significantly to the country's GDP. It is a major financial center in Southeast Asia, with numerous multinational corporations, banks, and financial institutions headquartered here.

As a major global tourist destination, Bangkok never fails to wow its visitors. The city is renowned for its vibrant street life, cultural landmarks, and bustling markets. Bangkok has various incredible foods, making it a paradise for foodies, with countless street vendors offering everything from spicy pad thai to delicious mango sticky rice. The city is a blend of old and new, where you can explore ancient temples like Wat Pho and Wat Arun during the day, and then hit the trendy rooftop bars and bustling night markets in the evening. The Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the largest markets in the world, is a must-visit for shopping enthusiasts.

Public transportation, especially the BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway, makes getting around super easy. Plus, the locals are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ready with a smile and a helping hand. If you're up for some adventure, take a boat tour along the Chao Phraya River to see the city from a different angle. With so much to see and do, Bangkok promises an unforgettable experience that you'll cherish forever.

Best Way to Get to Bangkok

If you’re planning a trip to Bangkok, firstly you need to ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter Thailand. Check the latest visa requirements and apply in advance if necessary.

You can book flights to go to Bangkok. Bangkok is served by two main airports: Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK). Most travelers fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), the city’s main international gateway, which is well-connected with flights from all over the world. Meanwhile, Don Mueang Airport (DMK) is another airport in Bangkok for budget airlines, making it easy to find a flight that fits your budget.

Once you land, you have several options to reach the city center. You can utilize the Airport Rail Link, a speedy train service from BKK to central Bangkok in order to get to the city center quickly. It connects the airport to the Phaya Thai Station, where you can transfer to the BTS Skytrain. The journey takes about 30 minutes and trains run from 05:30 to midnight daily. Meanwhile if you arrive at DMK, you can catch a train from DMK to the Hua Lamphong Railway Station in central Bangkok. The journey takes about 48 minutes.

Alternatively, you can grab a taxi or use a ride-sharing app available at both airports for direct transit to your accommodation. And if you are looking for the most economical way to go to Bangkok, take the public bus. There are several bus lines that run from BKK and DMK to various parts of Bangkok. However, please consider that even though taking the bus is the cheapest option, it can also be the slowest, especially during peak hours. So, allocate more time if you want to take this mode of transportation.

Transportations to Get Around Bangkok

Getting around Bangkok is both fun and convenient, with a variety of transportation options to suit every traveler’s needs. Here are some modes of transportation you can take to get around Bangkok:

BTS Skytrain

The BTS Skytrain is one of Bangkok’s most efficient public transportation systems, allowing both locals and tourists to navigate the city with ease.It has three main lines: the Sukhumvit Line, the Silom Line, and the Gold Line with over 60 stations across the city. It’s clean, air-conditioned, and can whisk you above the traffic to major shopping areas, markets, and tourist spots such as Chatuchak Weekend Market and Lumpini Park. You can purchase single journey tickets, a one-day pass, or a rechargeable Rabbit card. However, these are not valid on the MRT or Airport Rail Link. Don’t worry about missing the train as the BTS Skytrain operates from early morning until midnight, making it a convenient option for travelers.

MRT Subway

The MRT Subway is another great option for commuting within the city, consisting of four lines, including the Blue Line and the Purple Line, with plans for expansion. MRT Subway is one of the most convenient public transportations to take, especially if you need to reach places that the BTS Skytrain doesn’t cover. It also connects to the BTS at several points, such as Asok, Mo Chit, Sala Daeng, and Bang Wa stations, making your transit at ease. The MRT operates from 6 a.m. to midnight, with frequency varying between peak and off-peak hours so you can travel peacefully with no worry of missing the subway.

Tuk-Tuk

For a more traditional experience, try the city’s iconic tuk-tuks. These three-wheeled vehicles are great for short distances and provide a bit of adventure with every ride. Just remember to negotiate the fare before hopping in.

Taxi and E-hailing Service

Taxis are plentiful and affordable, but it’s best to ensure the driver uses the meter. For quick rides, e-hailing service is widely used and very convenient.

Bus

Don’t forget the buses, which are an economical way to get around. There are both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned options, and routes cover almost every part of the city. While the routes can be a bit confusing at first, the experience is quite authentic and local.

River Boat

If you’re looking for a scenic and leisurely way to travel, take a boat along the Chao Phraya River. The Chao Phraya Express Boat service is not only a fantastic way to avoid traffic but also offers a unique perspective of the city’s riverside attractions. You can also take the Khlong boats that navigate the city’s network of canals, providing a glimpse into local life away from the bustling streets.

Car and Bike Rental

And for a hassle-free and comfortable journey, many hotels and tour companies offer private car services with knowledgeable drivers who can double as guides. For those who prefer a bit of independence, renting a motorbike or bicycle can be an exciting way to explore, though it’s best suited for the more adventurous due to the city’s hectic traffic.

Activities to Do in Bangkok

Bangkok is bursting with activities that cater to every kind of traveler, making it an ideal destination to explore and experience. Here are some recommended activities you can do in Bangkok:

Nearby, Wat Pho houses the famous reclining Buddha, and it's also a great place to enjoy a traditional Thai massage.

If you’re a history buff, head to the Jim Thompson House, a beautiful museum showcasing traditional Thai architecture and artifacts.

2. Explore Shopping and Food Centres

Food lovers will find Bangkok a paradise. Dive into the street food scene with dishes like pad thai, som tum (papaya salad), and mango sticky rice. For a unique dining experience, try a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya River, where you can enjoy delicious Thai cuisine while taking in the city’s illuminated skyline.

Shopping in Bangkok is an adventure in itself. Chatuchak Weekend Market is a must-visit, with thousands of stalls selling everything from clothes to antiques. Pratunam is also one of the best places to visit for foreign travelers as this area is renowned for its bustling markets and shopping centers, offering everything from fashion and accessories to electronics at bargain prices. For a more upscale experience, visit the luxurious malls like Siam Paragon or CentralWorld, which offer international brands and high-end dining options.

3. Indulge in Art Scenes

For art enthusiasts, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre offers contemporary art exhibitions and is a vibrant hub for local artists. Don’t miss the cultural shows like the Siam Niramit, which presents a spectacular performance of Thailand’s history and culture. For a more interactive experience, take a cooking class to learn how to prepare your favorite Thai dishes, or join a Muay Thai class to get a taste of Thailand’s traditional martial art.

4. Escape in Relaxing Spaces

For a relaxing day, visit the serene Lumpini Park, where you can rent a paddleboat or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll. And if you’re up for a day trip, the floating markets just outside the city offer a unique shopping experience on water.

Must-Try Dishes in Bangkok

Bangkok is a culinary paradise, offering a tantalizing array of dishes that every food lover must try. First up is Pad Thai, Thailand’s iconic noodle dish. This stir-fried delight combines rice noodles, shrimp, tofu, bean sprouts, and eggs, all tossed in a tangy tamarind sauce and topped with crushed peanuts. You can find it everywhere, from street vendors to upscale restaurants, and each bite is a flavor explosion.

Next, don’t miss out on Som Tum, the spicy green papaya salad. This refreshing dish combines shredded papaya, tomatoes, green beans, peanuts, and dried shrimp, all tossed in a spicy lime dressing. It’s a perfect balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors that will keep you coming back for more.

For something heartier, try Tom Yum Goong, the famous Thai hot and sour soup. Made with shrimp, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, lime juice, fish sauce, and chili peppers, this soup is a fragrant and flavorful experience that packs a punch. It’s a great way to kick off any meal in Bangkok.

Lastly, don’t forget to satisfy your sweet tooth with Mango Sticky Rice. This beloved dessert features ripe mango slices served with sticky rice cooked in coconut milk and sprinkled with crunchy mung beans. It’s the perfect blend of sweet, creamy, and fruity flavors.

Nightlife in Bangkok

Bangkok is the city that never sleeps and you can find so much joy at night like you feel when the sun shines. If you’re a skyline enthusiast and want to capture the best moment from an aerial view, you can check out the rooftop bars like Sky Bar at Lebua State Tower for stunning views and chic cocktails. Meanwhile if you’re looking for something more vibrant, the nightlife districts of Khao San Road and Sukhumvit offer an array of bars, clubs, and live music venues where you can dance the night away with diverse options of music, from EDM to hip-hop.

Don’t miss the vibrant night markets like Asiatique, where you can shop, eat, and enjoy live entertainment. For a cultural twist, catch a traditional Thai dance performance or a Muay Thai fight. Bangkok’s nightlife is an exhilarating blend of sights, sounds, and experiences that will make your nights as memorable as your days.
