What Guests Say About Their Stay

Overall the hotel was clean, the location was good, and the stay itself was fine. However, there were several disappointing issues. First, the hotel advertises parking, but when we arrived there were no available spots at all, so we were forced to use expensive paid parking elsewhere. This should be made clear in advance instead of giving guests the impression that parking will actually be available. Second, the security deposit was unreasonably high — $250 for just one night. That amount is excessive and unnecessary, especially for a short stay. The breakfast was also very poor and extremely limited, with barely any selection. The hotel itself was decent

Check-in and the welcome were very friendly. The room was clean and had everything we needed in both the bedroom and the bathroom. The included breakfast was excellent with a great variety of food. The hotel's location is very convenient, just steps from the metro station.

I booked this hotel because I got my F1 ticket very late and there were not many options available. The room was OK, but it definitely needs updates: the TV is very small and does not offer Netflix or YouTube connection, there are not enough power outlets, there is no fan in the bathroom. Room service is only provided if you notify the front desk. I understand that some other hotels follow the same practice, but they usually leave a clear sign in the bathroom or on the desk explaining it, whereas this hotel did not. One of the front desk staff was not very friendly to guests who do not speak French. The breakfast was OK, but there was no meat at all, and guests had to bend down to place dirty forks and knives into a small bucket next to the trash can, which was not very customer-friendly. They also have very limited parking. I would not stay there again.

Staff was nice. Except upon entering, we were told there were so parking spots left if we didn’t make a reservation for parking. We had no idea. So we were told to park down the street in public parking. Room was small. Beds were small. Whole hotel feel was just outdated and gross. No washcloths in the bathroom. No place to put your soap or shampoo bottles in the shower. Never even tried the breakfast. They only gave us 2 breakfast tickets when we were 3 adults on the reservation. Didn’t even bother to go get that corrected. Would not stay here again.

Really felt like we drew a wild card here, after reading the terrible Google AND the Expedia reviews, the latter of which clearly were edited to make it seem better than the former. I had booked months in advance trusting Expedia, but had a near panic the day before on reading in Google about an infestation of bed bugs looked like sometime last year. Yes it wasn’t the Fairmont, back room on the alley with the bus station and a homeless shelter, but it is the city, and the downtown location right near Berri-UQuam and the latin quarter can’t be beat, so much around the area. We had a great stay here, room and common spaces, were very clean, bathroom modern and had plenty of hot water, beds comfy, a/c quiet and working, no bed bugs thank goodness, mini fridge too. No in room lock boxes. The front desk help was super friendly and helpful.

Unfortunately we did not have a good stay. We stayed for 3 nights/4 days. Our air conditioning was not working in our room at all. We had asked for our air conditioning to be fixed and by the 3rd day I had asked 3 times and still did not get it fixed. It was very hot the days we were there (25 degrees and over). The third day I went to the front desk at 10am to ask about the air conditioning again. The couple in front of us had the same issue. We were told it would be fixed. We got back to our room at 4pm and it was still not fixed. Went down again to ask about it and ask for more plastic cups. Was told 10-15 mins and someone would be up. Waited 2hrs and 45mins and still no one showed up. Went down to the front desk. Waited there instead of up in my room to ensure I would be helped. They finally found someone to “help” me about 20 mins later. He came up to the room, looked at the thermostat and said it was fixed. I advised it was not as we could no longer adjust the temperature on the control when we could before but it just wasn’t cooling. He said he would check back in 30 mins. We had to leave for our dinner reservation. Came back after 10pm and it still wasn’t working. Went back down to the front desk shortly after midnight for a noise complaint of our neighbour. They said they would be right up. We waited outside our room for 20 mins to see if they were coming up but no one did. Spend a bit more money and stay elsewhere. Would not return ever again.

First of all, the check-in process was one of the worst I’ve ever experienced. The line was constantly long because it seemed to take nearly 45 minutes per guest just to complete check-in and that’s only if everything went smoothly. My own check-in experience was terrible. Before arriving, I had already added a credit card to the reservation, but for some reason they refused to use it and instead demanded cash. When I offered the equivalent amount in USD based on our reservation total, they still refused it. Our booking was 385 CAD, which converts to roughly 281 USD, but they insisted on charging 385 USD instead — over 500 CAD. There was no way I was agreeing to that. I then had to contact the booking agency to update the reservation into my travel partner’s name so we could use their card. After that, we had to stand in the long check-in line for a third time. During the process, they also seemed confused about the booking platform, asking if we booked through Expedia when we had actually booked through Hotels.com. On top of that, they requested an additional security deposit that was never clearly disclosed beforehand. At that point, after spending well over an hour dealing with check-in, I just paid it so we could finally get to the room. The room itself was modest and bordering on shabby. It also lacked amenities that were shown in the listing photos, including a fridge and a larger TV. Even the elevators were bad, skip this one or you will regret it!!

Overall, we had a good stay at Empire Suites, with a few notable drawbacks. The location is a strong point—convenient for downtown Montreal and within walking distance to many attractions, restaurants, shops, and places like Bell Centre. The hotel itself is older and could use some updates. We booked a room with two beds, which included one standard bed and a pullout couch for the kids. Unfortunately, the pullout bed was very uncomfortable. When we first opened it, there was also a box of condoms left on the floor, which was an unpleasant surprise, especially with children. Aside from that, the overall cleanliness of the room and hotel was very good. Staff were friendly and helpful, and we had no issues with service. One thing to note is that rooms do not include a fridge, which would have been helpful for a family stay. Parking is available in the garage, which is convenient, but spaces are quite tight—larger vehicles may have difficulty. Breakfast was included and was good, but you need to arrive early. While items were restocked, the selection became more limited as the morning went on. In summary, this was a good stay overall thanks to location and staff, but the rooms would benefit from updates and a few improvements for families.
