Currently, you can get one-way fares between Bali / Denpasar and Kupang for as low as AU$103. One of the most well-known travel hacks is to start looking at flight tickets 4-6 weeks in advance.
This is when availability is still plentiful, so you can choose the best flight times that suit your schedule and preferences, and pricing is competitive. If possible, try to avoid last-minute flight bookings, as prices tend to be at their highest.
Timing your flight will make a world of difference to your wallet and your travel schedule – and we have the inside scoop on when the cheapest time to fly to Kupang is.
Generally, mid-week flights are the cheapest, with Tuesday and Wednesday flights from Bali to Kupang delivering the most attractive pricing at just AU$103. Demand for mid-week flights is lower compared to Friday or weekend flights, so airlines tend to offer lower prices to fill seats. So, if your schedule allows, booking a mid-week flight is a win-win for all.
It’s worth noting that peak travel season for Kupang (and Indonesia more broadly) is between July and August – aligning with the Indonesian school holidays and the dry season (AKA vacation-perfect weather). Therefore, travelling during these months may be pricey due to demand.
Domestic travel is also quite high around 7-10 days before and after Eid al-Fitr, which is one of the country's biggest national and religious celebrations. When Eid al-Fitr falls is different every year, but it generally falls between February - March.
Our tip? Consider timing your adventure outside of these peak months (along with the usual Christmas and New Year chaos) for significant savings and unique experiences.
There is only one airport in Kupang called the El Tari Airport. Situated only 7 kms from the city centre, meaning it’s pretty easy to get to. There are a few ways you can make your way to the airport, and depending on your budget and style, you’ll be able to find one that suits you best.
The most reliable option would be to get a taxi from wherever you’re coming from. A taxi ride from the city centre should take around 15-30 minutes and cost around AU$6-10. Rideshare services are also popular in Indonesia, with local apps like Gojek and Grab offering even cheaper fares from as low as AU$4. Further, some hotels may offer an airport shuttle service, too. For travellers who like to plan ahead, coordinating with your hotel for a ride to the airport is an excellent, fuss-free option.
While this is a domestic route within Indonesia, Aussies will need to travel with their passport, and it's crucial that your visa is still valid for your stay in Kupang.
For Australians travelling to Indonesia, you’ll need to ensure your passport has at least 6 months until expiry from the date you enter the country. Additionally, you must have at least one blank page for any entry or exit stamps.
In terms of visas, Australians will need to obtain either a Visa on Arrival (VoA) or an e-VoA, both of which serve the same purpose, granting tourists up to 30 days in Indonesia.
Obtaining a VoA is relatively simple and costs approximately AU$50. You can pay for this upon arrival (as the name suggests) in major Indonesian airports (like El Tari in Kupang or Denpasar in Bali). This visa is valid for 30 days. You can apply for an extension for an additional 30 days, but applications for extensions must be made at least 7 days before your initial visa expires. Further, you can only apply for an extension of 30 days once, making 60 consecutive days your maximum stay in Indonesia.
If you like to be prepared, you can also apply for an e-VoA before you fly to Indonesia online, here. Fees are the same, except you can skip the queue for efficiency.
Luckily, you won’t need to adjust your watch for this one. Bali and Kupang share the same time zone - Central Indonesian Time. However, if you’re looking for a sweet spot to FaceTime family back in Australia, the time difference between Bali or Kupang and Australian cities is between 1.5 and 2 hours ahead (or 2.5 to 3 hours ahead if it’s Daylight Savings), depending on which city you’re calling. Coincidentally, there is also no time difference between Bali/Kupang and Perth.
