Khon Kaen is a city located in Northeast Thailand (Insan), and is one of the four major cities in the region. Although the city is not among the popular destinations in Thailand, there are many interesting things to do here, such as seeing dinosaur fossils at Phu Wiang National Park, visiting Wat Nong Wang-a beautiful nine-story temple, picnicking around Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake, and hunting for unique items at Khon Kaen's Day & Night Markets. For foodies, you can sample rich Thai specialties, such as Tom yam, Isan sausage and larb.
Here are 3 suitable places to visit in Khon Kaen using a rental car:
You can start your trip by visiting Bueng Kaen Nakhon, which is located in Nai Mueang (Khon Kaen city center). Bueng Kaen Nakhon is a park located around Bueng Kaen Nakhon Lake. The park has a large green area, which is perfect for a picnic with family or friends. One can bring mats and food, relax under the trees, and enjoy the serene atmosphere.
After relaxing at Bueng Kaen Nakhon, you can head straight to Wat Nong Wang, which is a three-minute drive away. Wat Nong Wang is a Buddhist temple created to celebrate the golden jubilee of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's reign, as well as the 200th anniversary of Khon Kaen province. The temple attracts tourists thanks to its magnificent and beautiful pagoda architecture, with very rich and delicate ornamental details, reflecting the traditional Thai art style.
Each floor inside the pagoda houses various artworks and artifacts that tell the cultural and religious history of the Isan region. Many murals, sculptures and carvings show the life of the Buddha as well as Buddhist philosophy and teachings. Visitors can also find holy relics on the top floor.
Phu Wiang National Park is located in Wiang Kao district, which is about 86 km or about 90 minutes away from Khon Kaen city center. The park is famous for the discovery of dinosaur fossils, and its natural beauty. In this park, you can see fossils and footprints of ancient creatures that are thought to have lived around 120 million years ago. These fossils come from meat-eating dinosaur species such as Siamotyrannus isanensis, plant-eating dinosaurs such as Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae, and Ginareemimus-a bird-like dinosaur. For natural attractions, you can visit Tat Fase Waterfall, which is only 300 meters away from the parking area. If you're looking for a more immersive experience, you can continue your adventure by exploring the surrounding hiking trails.
