Yantai, previously known as Zhifu or Chefoo, is a coastal prefecture-level city on the Shandong Peninsula in northeastern Shandong province of the People's Republic of China. Sitting on the southern coast of the Bohai Strait, Yantai borders Qingdao on the southwest and Weihai on the east, with sea access to together the Bohai Sea (via the Laizhou Bay and the Bohai Channel) and the Yellow Sea (from both north and south sides of the Shandong Peninsula). It is the biggest fishing seaport in Shandong. Yantai Penglai International Airport is an airport that served the city of Yantai in Shandong Province, China. It is situated 43 kilometres (27 mi) from the city centre, near the town of Chaoshui in Penglai, a county-level city controlled by Yantai. Construction officially started on 26 December 2009 and the airport was opened on 28 May 2015, when all flights serving Yantai were removed from the old Laishan Airport. The first flight, China Eastern Airlines MU5136, landed at the airport from Beijing at 00:05 on 28 May. Initially called Yantai Chaoshui International Airport the airport adopted the existing name in April 2014.
