Welcome to Paro International Airport

Paro International Airport (PBH) is Bhutan's international gateway, set deep in the Paro Valley at around 2,235 metres above sea level. The Department of Air Transport operates the airport, and commercial flights began in 1983. It is the home base of both Bhutanese airlines, Drukair and Bhutan Airlines.

Mountains rising to about 5,500 metres surround the valley. For that reason only a small group of specially certified pilots is allowed to land here, and flights operate in daylight and good visibility.

Location and Distance from Paro and Thimphu

The airport lies beside the Paro Chhu river, about 3.5 km from Paro town. The capital, Thimphu, is around 54 km away by the Paro–Thimphu road, usually about an hour's drive.

The terminal is built in traditional Bhutanese style, with painted woodwork and sloping roofs that echo the dzongs nearby. It is compact, so check-in, immigration and baggage reclaim are close together.

Airlines and Routes from Paro

Drukair and Bhutan Airlines run all scheduled services. Their networks cover regional hubs including Bangkok, Delhi, Kathmandu and Kolkata, and Drukair also flies to cities such as Singapore and Dhaka. Some routes are seasonal, so confirm the current schedule.

Getting from Paro Airport to Your Hotel

Most visitors travel with a licensed Bhutanese tour operator, who meets them at arrivals with a car and driver. Taxis are also available outside the terminal for the short ride into Paro or the drive to Thimphu.

Sights Around Paro

Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery, clings to a cliff above the valley and is the region's signature hike. Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum overlook Paro town, and Kyichu Lhakhang is an ancient temple revered across the kingdom.

Tips for Flying into Paro

Ask for a window seat, as the approach passes close to the mountains and gives memorable views. Weather can delay flights, especially in the afternoon, so leave a buffer before international connections. Arrange your visa and travel permits in advance.
