Flights to Ranong, Thailand

Ranongis one of Thailand's southern provinces (changwat), on the west coast along the Andaman Sea. It has the fewest inhabitants of all Thai provinces. Neighboring Ranong is (clockwise) Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Phang Nga. To the west, it borders Kawthaung, Tanintharyl, Myanmar. Ranong is on the Kra Isthmus, a narrow strip of land, only 44 kilometres wide, that connects Thailand with the Malay Peninsula, on the west of the Phuket mountain range. It has a long coast on the Andaman Sea. The province, together with Trat Province, is known for being one of the wettest places in Thailand, the rainy season lasting for about eight months. Ranong is the least populated province. Eighty percent of its area is covered by forests, and 67 percent is mountainous. In former years the primary industry was tinmining, but most mines are now exhausted. White clay mining (for the production of porcelain) and fishing are now the main industries, along with rubber and cashew nuts. The Ngao Mangrove Forest Research Centre, also known as the Ranong Biosphere Reserve, in the north of Kapoe District, covering 189,431 rai (303.09km2), was declared in 1997. It is the fourth biosphere reserve of Thailand and the only one on the seacoast protecting mangrove forests. Klong Nakha Wildlife Sanctuaryis in the south of the province.

If you're looking for the very warmest time to visit Ranong, the hottest months are April, March, and then May.

What are the Top 3 Things to Do in Ranong?

1. Ko Phayam - Ko Phayam is the second largest Andaman Sea island off the coast of Ranong Province (Ko Chang, about 4 km distant, is the largest). Ko Phayam has no roads suitable for automobiles. Thus motorbikes are the chief means of transport. Tourists hire motorbikes or motorbike taxis at the pier and ride along the road to the resorts. There two major beaches/bays, i.e., Ao Yai and Ao Kao Kwai (Buffalo Bay). For those who want to get away from it all, Ko Phayam is reminiscent of what Ko Samui was like 30 years ago, before the airport and hotel developments. Ao Yai is the largest bay on the west coast, about 3 km long and 300 m wide, with a white sand beach and a gentle swell from the Andaman Stunning sunsets as well. Ko Phayam is widely thought to be one of the most beautiful--and undiscovered--of Thailand's islands.

2. Laem Son National Park - Laem Son National Parkis located in Ranongand Phangngaprovinces, Thailand. It is situated 60 kilometres (37mi) south of Ranongon the country's west coast, with 100 kilometres (62mi) of Andaman Seacoastline, making it Thailand's longest protected shore. The marine national park is named after the pines along the cape's shore. It was established in 1983 and is 315 square kilometres (122sqmi) in size. The NP is a coastal area with beaches, coral reefs, mangrove swamps, and rainforest. From the beach at Hat Bang Ben, some of the 20 offshore islands are visible, such as Ko Kam Yai, Ko Kam Noi, Mu Ko Yipun, Ko Khang Khao, and Ko Phayam, while Ko Kam Tok (alternate Ko Ao Khao Khwai) and Ko Kam Yai are not visible from this beach. The islands of Piak Nam Yai and Thao is noted for stone-tool usage by long-tailed macaques. In 2002, the Laemson National Park-Kapoe Estuary-Kra Buri River Estuary area became a designated Ramsar site. After the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, the park headquarters were flattened, and Ao Khao Khwai (Bull Horn Bay) was split into two small islands. A consortium of institutional partners is facilitating a mangrove restoration project at Laem Son.

3. Ranong Canyon - The canyon was once a mine that gradually filled with water after workers hit a spring, which combined with rainwater over the decades. Reflections of the cliffs shimmer on a surface disturbed only by carp fattened from the fish food tossed by travellers. Adorable local kids came up to sell us fish food, and we bought two bags for 20 baht, giving them a bag to try and lure some of the “big fish” that they promised lived out in the depths. Great for a picnic or a spot of relaxation, the canyon is usually hit after Raksawarin Hot Springs, located 10 kilometres back west. It’s a beautiful drive up into the mountains, taking you alongside the Phoemphon River, through villages and past golden chedis perched over shaggy green hills.
