Melbourne is Australia's second largest city and the capital of the south-eastern state of Victoria. The city serves as Australia’s cultural capital and is full of Victorian-era architecture, cafés, bars and restaurants, shopping areas, museums, galleries, theatres, and large parks and gardens. The city’s nearly 5-million residents are both multicultural and are crazy about sports. The city has hosted a range of major international sporting events such as the Australian Open, Melbourne Cup Carnival and Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Apart from that, Melbourne also features some of the world's most popular art galleries and museums such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Museum. The city’s culture is represented by its world-famous street art, coffee culture, pubs and live music. Despite its modern surroundings, Melbourne features many gardens, national parks and areas that are home to some of Australia's iconic wildlife. History lovers everywhere will enjoy visiting the city’s indigenous sites, museums and experiences that maintain a vital link to the people and culture of the First Nations.
Melbourne Airport, also known as Tullamarine Airport, is situated 22km northwest of the city and is the main international and domestic hub. The fastest way to the city centre will be with a taxi, then a Skybus or shuttle bus (depending on departure, transfer times and traffic). The cheapest way to the city is with public transport, with a one-way fare costing $4 compared to $12 to $14 with Greenbus, $18 to $20 for Skybus or shuttle buses and $55 to $60 for a taxi. If you plan to move around the city using public transportation, then it’s better to get the Myki card as it is essential for all public transport in Melbourne. The card will also give you a one-off discount on the bus fare from the airport. The 901 bus that goes into the city departs from the bus zone, across Terminal 4. It connects to trains at Broadmeadows station, where you can take a train directly to any of the city stations, with the total journey usually taking 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Voted ‘most liveable city’ time and time again, it’s no wonder that tourists flock to Melbourne, Australia. Everyone will certainly find something that will interest them in this dynamic city. The City Centre, including nearby Southbank and Docklands, has much to attract the traveller, including theatres, art galleries, cafés, boutiques, plenty of live music, clubs and bars, department stores, and interesting Victorian architecture. Most of the most well-known attractions in Melbourne reside in this district. Some of the more interesting sites are:
State Library of Victoria
Most well-known for its iconic La Trobe reading room, the State Library of Victoria is a grand building that is well worthy of an hour’s exploration. As well as snapping a photo of the beautiful interior of the reading room, you can see various exhibits that demonstrate Victoria’s history, as well as various displays about literature.
The Melbourne Museum
this museum details permanent and temporary exhibitions are telling the story of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and the world. From the evolution of life in Victoria to a tear-jerking WWII exhibition, this is the place to go to learn about the history of the state – and browse some other intriguing exhibits.
Federation Square & Australian Center for Moving Image (ACMI)
Federation Square is located right in the heart of the city. The pedestrianised square is the location of the Australian Centre for the Moving Image; a fascinating and informative space focused on film and photography across Australia. Admission to ACMI is free and visitors are invited to explore and check out their permanent exhibitions. However some temporary events, special exhibitions, or movie screenings may charge a small entry fee, so it’s best to check ahead before visiting.
Melbourne’s Street Art
Nearby Federation Square you’ll be able to see the city’s most popular attractions. Melbourne is famed for its culture and the street art decorating buildings across the whole city is a prime example. Wander along Flinders Street and if you’re a keen-eyed camera enthusiast, capture a snap of the iconic yellow archway of Flinders Street Station before heading down the side streets.
Prahran Market & Chapel Street
Prahran is a popular favourite with the locals for its bustling market and many hipster cafes, bars, and restaurants. It’s just a 20-minute tram ride down St Kilda Road to reach the High Street of Prahran, from where you can walk a couple of minutes to the market. Alternatively, you can catch a metro train from Flinders Street Station for just a 10-minute journey right to Prahran station and walk a short distance from there. Explore the market and sample the tasty treats on offer before taking an afternoon to rest at one of the many cafés Chapel Street. These places are romantic and ideal for a honeymoon venue.
What to Eat?
For the culinary traveler, Melbourne is one of the best destinations in the world. There is an abundance of affordable, high quality restaurants representing almost every cuisine. Excellent eateries and cafes are offering high quality food, and representing various cultures and countries, are scattered through the city. Food lovers are indeed spoiled for choice when visiting this city. They are indeed best to be enjoyed together with the loved ones.
Chicken Parmigiana
This classic Aussie chicken dish — with roots in Italian-American cooking — is a staple offering on pretty much every pub menu in Australia. Originally eggplant based (and these are still available for vegetarians), it has evolved in to a chicken schnitzel topped with tomato sauce, melted cheese and, if you’re feeling fancy, prosciutto ham. This is typically served with salad and chips.
Lamingtons
Widely recognised as the ‘National Cake of Australia’ the lamington is a modest square-shaped sponge dipped in chocolate and coated with desiccated coconut. Other variations include two layers and a cream or jam filling — seen by many as a vital addition. They go perfectly with a nice cup of bush tea, or maybe one of Melbourne’s world-famous coffees, and are available in all good bakeries and cafes.
Burgers
If tomato, lettuce, onions and a juicy meat patty just isn’t enough burger then maybe you should try the Aussie gut-buster with ‘the lot’. Take a burger bun and stuff it with barbequed meat, salad, sauce and, for the Australian twist, add a slice of pineapple, some pickled beetroot and a fried egg. One of the best places for burgers in Melbourne is Café 51 and Tuck Shop Takeaway.
Brighton Beach
Enjoy a day away from the city by soaking up the sunshine at Brighton Beach. A short 25-minute train from Flinders Street Station, hop off at Middle Brighton or Brighton Beach station and walk to one of the beaches. The golden sands of Dendy Street Beach are lined with beach boxes and with views stretching over towards the cityscape in the distance, it’s certainly one of the most popular beaches. Beautiful clear waters make for a relaxing swim and one can easily spend the day enjoying the relaxed atmosphere in this affluent suburb. Brighton Beach is a great destination for both families and honeymooners and is a perfect location for a weekend getaway.
St. Kilda
St Kilda is another favourite destination and is great for those who travel with friends or family. Like most places in Melbourne, it can be accessed by train or tram. The easiest way to see the main attractions is to take any route via St Kilda (such as 3 or 16) and hop off at Luna Park/The Esplanade. Luna Park is an amusement park offering family fun with rides and games. Entry to the park itself is just $2, or unlimited ride tickets are $49.95 for those over 13 years.
