Zhanjiang, formerly known as Tsamkong, is a city and a major port in the southwestern Guangdong sheng (province), China. It is located on Zhanjiang Bay on the eastern side of the Leizhou Peninsula, where it is protected by Naozhou and Donghai islands. Originally Zhanjiang was a minor fishing port in the area dominated by the city of Leizhou (Haikang), about 35 km to the southwest, and at one time harbored a notorious nest of pirates.
