What are the Top 3 Things to Do in Broome?

1. Cable Beach - Cable Beach is a 22 km (14 mi) stretch of white sand beach on the eastern Indian Ocean and the name of the surrounding suburb in Broome, Western Australia. Cable Beach was named after the telegraph cable laid between Broome and Java in 1889. Low cliffs of red ochre rise behind the very flat and wide beach, with waves that are mostly gentle in the dry season from May to October. In 2016, the population was 5,436. Gantheaume Point is located at the extreme southern end of the beach. The Gantheaume Point lighthouse is a good place for observing dolphins and migrating whales during their migration seasons. Dinosaur footprints estimated at 130 million years old are visible in the rocks at low tides. Minyirr Park is located adjacent to the southern section of the beach with walking trails that traverse the area behind the red ochre dunes. The park is a coastal reserve that protects the traditional land of the Yawuru people.

2. The Broome Historical Society - The Broome Historical Society has been committed to preserving and protecting Broome’s heritage and history for over forty years. They are a not for profit organisation run by a dedicated group of volunteers. Their significant collection is spread across three buildings, including the heritage award winning Sailmaker’s Shed. The Broome Historical Society has been responsible for some publications on Broome’s history.

3. The Broome Courthouse - The Broome courthouse had a rich historical significance to Western Australia and began its life as a cable station enabling early telephone communication with the rest of the world. In Australia, in the second half of the nineteenth century, colonial governments installed electric telegraph lines that linked capital cities with one another and with ports and country towns. Messages sent over some of these lines could be sent further still, for example, to Britain, using commercial submarine cables. Two cables linked Java and Darwin and, in 1818, the Eastern Extension, Australasia and China Telegraph Company Limited (referred to as the E.E.T. Company) decided to run another cable between Java and Western Australia. The cable ship the Seine landed this cable in February 1889, giving rise to the name Cable Beach.
