Cathay Pacific (CX/CPA) is Hong Kong's flag carrier founded in 1946, serving more than 110 destinations worldwide. Besides commercial flight, Cathay Pacific also operates cargo, catering and aircraft maintenance service.

Cathay Pacific is headquartered at Hong Kong International Airport, with Dragon Airlines as its subsidiary. Dragon Airlines serves commercial flights to 52 destinations in Asia Pacific.

Cathay Pacific's main mission is to be the world's best airline which prioritizes safety above all, develops a winning team that provides outstanding services and products. Cathay Pacific crew is trained to serve from the heart, support Hong Kong and become a fully dedicated company in both social and environment sectors.

Cathay Pacific is known for its great reputation, awarded for numerous achievements. In June 2013, the airline is awarded as “World’s Best Cabin Staff” and the best airline in Trans-Pacific at Skytrax World Airline Awards. In January 2013, Cathay Pacific won “Best Business Class”, “The Most Favorite Airlines Award” and “Green Pioneer in Travel Industry Award”. Those are only a few from other awards achieved in the same year as well as previous years. Recently in 2015, Cathay Pacific was awarded as Best Airlines by Ming Pao Weekly Elite Awards 2014, as well as the world’s new leading airline in terms of its safety record by JACDEC Airline Safety Ranking 2015.

Cathay Pacific has four travel classes: First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy Class and Economy Class. In-flight Entertainment is provided in all classes, varying from the latest Box Office, TV series, games etc. In First and Business Class, passengers can choose a la carte menu and serving time. Aside from main meal and snacks, passengers of long-haul Economy Class get desserts like ice cream.

Economy Class passengers get the privelege of up to 20 kg free checked baggage, Premium Economy up to 25 kg, Business Class up to 30 kg and First Class up to 40 kg. Infant gets extra free baggage up to 10 kg in all travel classes. Each passenger is allowed to bring cabin baggage up to 7 kg (Economy & Premium Economy Class), 10 kg (Business Class) and 15 kg (First Class).

Cathay Pacific History

On 24 September 1946, Roy C. Farrell and Sydney H. de Kantzow founded Cathay Pacific Airways. The two ex military pilots from the US and Australia used to live in Shanghai before they moved to Hong Kong to build Cathay Pacific.

In 1948, Swire Group acquired almost half of Cathay Pacific shares (45%), 35% of the shares was acquired by Australian National Airways, with Kantzow and Farrell acquired each the rest 10%. After the restructuration, the airline officially operates under the name Cathay Pacific Ltd.

Periods of 1960-1980s was marked by Cathay Pacific's profound success. In 1959, Cathay Pacific took over Hong Kong Airways and experienced a tremendous growth. This Hong Kong's carrier flag went under several expansion, such as adding internationl flights to Japan, London and Vancouver, operating Convair 880, shifting into computerized reservation system and flight simulator.

In 1990, Cathay Pacific decided to take over Dragonair. Four years after, Cathay Pacific went through rebranding project. Boeing 777-300 was added to strengthen the fleet in 1998. Also in the same year, Cathay Pacific joined Oneworld together with Qantas, American Airlines and British Airways.

Cathay Pacific did a series of project in welcoming millennium era. In 1999, Cathay Pacific headquarter called Cathay Pacific City began to operate. The airline also had a significant success in reaching up to HKD 5 billion profit in 2000.

Cathay Pacific Passengers Policy

  • Infant with the age of 3-7 days is allowed to be on board only by providing medical reference, while infant below 2 days old is not allowed to be on board.
  • One adult passenger is allowed to carry only one infant.
  • Children above the age of 2 years (24 months) is charged with special fare, tax and other fees applied by airline.
  • Pregnancy above 28 weeks must provide medical reference published within 21 days from the first outbound flight.

Cathay Pacific flight attendant uniform is specially designed by Hong Kong's famous fashion designer, Eddie Lau. It shows a dominant red accent as well as elegant and modern style combining: red blazer, brush-wing logo on champagne blouse, collar, sleeves, red skirt, black low/high-heels with black thin stocking. The male attendant wears ottoman blazer, white shirt, a pair of black trousers, and a red tie with a touch of champagne.
