History of Singapore Airlines

The story of Singapore Airlines dates back to 1947 in British Malaya (colonial Singapore and Malaysia) under the name Malayan Airways Limited (MAL). It is a joint venture between Imperial Airways, the Ocean Steamship Company of Liverpool and the Straits Steamship of Singapore.

Since its early days, the airline has been emphasizing on the serving of in-flight meals by a female flight attendant. This becomes the precursor of its distinctive visual branding Singapore Girl.

In 1965, Singapore was expelled from the Federation of Malaysia and gained independence, making MAL the national airline for both Singapore and Malaysia. A year later, the name was changed to Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA). Malaysia-Singapore Airlines adopted a brand new logo and started to serve new routes to Taipei, Perth and some European cities like London and Rome with a fleet of De Havilland Comet, Boeing 707 and Boeing 737-100s, while retiring MAL’s older piston-powered Douglas DC-3 and DC-4s.

In 1972, MSA was split into two airline: Malaysia Airline System and Singapore Airlines. The latter decided to take over the former airline’s international routes and fleet. The airline then focused on fleet expansion, taking MSA’s Boeing 707s and Boeing 737-100s, while also adding Boeing 747-200s, Boeing 727-200 and the three-engined McDonnell Douglas DC-10.

Series of important events occurred in the 1980s. The airline’s headquarters moved from the old airport at Paya Lebar to the new Changi International Airport in 1981. Eight years later, Singapore Airlines became the first airline to operate a Boeing 747-400 across the Pacific. In the same year, the airline’s wholly owned SilkAir (formerly known as Tradewinds) was established as the country’s second airline and its regional subsidiary.

KrisFlyer, the airline’s frequent flyer programme was introduced in 1999, allowing passengers in all First, Business and Economy Class to earn mileage credits.

It set another world’s record in 2004 by inaugurating the longest non-stop commercial flight from Singapore to Los Angeles, followed by another non-stop flight from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey several months later. This flight, known as SQ 21, was served in an Airbus A340-500 (normally seating 313 passengers) seating only 100 passengers in an all business class configuration. This flight was the longest non-stop commercial route in the world, but was terminated in September 2013. In 2007, it became the first airline to operate the advanced double-decker Airbus A380.

Flight Attendant Uniform
