Kaohsiung International Airport, code KHH, is the main airport for southern Taiwan and one of the busiest in the country. Locals often call it Siaogang Airport, after the district it sits in. It handles both international and domestic traffic, which makes it a practical alternative to flying through Taipei.
The airport lies in Siaogang District, in the south of Kaohsiung city. It is roughly 8 to 9 km from the city centre, close enough that a metro ride into town takes well under half an hour.
KHH has two terminals side by side. One handles international flights and the other serves domestic routes, so check which one your airline uses before you set off. The international terminal has jet bridges and a large check-in hall, and both buildings connect directly to the metro station.
More than twenty airlines use the airport. Taiwanese carriers include China Airlines, EVA Air and Tigerair Taiwan, and a range of regional airlines fly in from across Asia. Domestic flights reach Taiwan's outlying islands as well as other cities.
Kaohsiung rewards a few days of exploring. The Pier-2 Art Center fills old harbour warehouses with galleries, while Lotus Pond is known for its colourful temples. Cijin Island, a short ferry ride away, has beaches and seafood stalls. Night markets such as Liuhe and Ruifeng are easy to reach by metro.
Since the two terminals serve different flight types, confirm yours before arriving. The metro is often the quickest way to the airport at rush hour. An EasyCard or iPASS stored-value card makes paying for the MRT simple.
