Muscat International Airport (MCT) is the main international gateway to Oman and the home base of the national carrier, Oman Air, as well as the low-cost airline SalamAir. Many long-time visitors still know it by its former name, Seeb International Airport, after the district in which it stands. The current airport site opened in 1973, and a large new passenger terminal began operating in March 2018.
Muscat is a long, spread-out capital strung along the coast between the mountains and the Gulf of Oman. The airport lies in Seeb, west of the older parts of the city, at a distance of roughly 30 km from the historic centre around Old Muscat and Mutrah. Newer districts such as Al Khuwair and Qurum are closer, along the main highway.
The newer terminal is spacious, with 118 check-in counters, 82 immigration counters and 45 gates spread across a single large building. A 97-metre control tower, built alongside the terminal, stands out from the highway. Travellers will find duty-free shopping, dining options and lounges airside. The older terminal building is no longer used for regular passenger flights.
Oman Air and SalamAir operate the largest share of flights, connecting Muscat with destinations across the Gulf, the Indian subcontinent, Asia, Europe and East Africa, as well as domestic points such as Salalah. A wide range of foreign airlines also fly in, which makes Muscat a practical connecting point between Asia and the Middle East.
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, with its vast prayer hall and chandelier, is a highlight close to the airport side of the city. Further east, the Mutrah Corniche and souq offer a slower pace, while the Royal Opera House Muscat hosts performances through the season. Day trips reach the forts of Nizwa and the wadis of the Hajar Mountains.
Check whether you need an Oman visa or an eVisa before you travel, since entry rules depend on your passport. The terminal is large, so leave extra walking time to reach your gate. Summers in Muscat are very hot, which makes lightweight clothing and a water bottle wise choices on arrival.
