Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is the main airport for Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, and for a wide area of northern Canada. It opened in 1960 and covers a large site in Leduc County, south of the city. Alongside passenger flights, the airport is a base for cargo, northern charter operators and air ambulance services, which makes it a busy link between the prairies and Canada's north.
YEG sits beside Highway 2, around 30 km south of downtown Edmonton and across the highway from the city of Leduc. The Airport Road interchange takes you straight to the terminal. By car, allow roughly half an hour to reach downtown outside rush hour.
One terminal building combines the older North section and the newer South section, which was added in a major expansion. Travellers heading to the United States can clear US border preclearance before departure. There are lounges, shops and places to eat, and a hotel is connected to the terminal. A short ride away, the Premium Outlet Collection shopping centre is part of the airport's commercial area.
WestJet is the main carrier, and other airlines including Air Canada, Flair Airlines, United Airlines and KLM also serve the airport. Flights reach cities across Canada, several US hubs, sun destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean, and Europe on selected routes. Northern carriers link Edmonton with communities in the territories.
Edmonton is known for its long river valley parks along the North Saskatchewan River, the Alberta Legislature and the vast West Edmonton Mall. Summer brings a packed calendar of festivals, and Elk Island National Park lies within an easy drive east of the city. Jasper National Park is a popular road trip west.
If you are flying to the US, leave extra time for preclearance, as you clear US immigration before boarding. Winters are long and cold, so check for de-icing delays and dress for the weather at the kerb. Leave enough time for the drive, too, as the airport is well outside the city.
