Stockholm Arlanda Airport is Sweden's main international gateway. It lies in Sigtuna Municipality, north of the capital, and is operated by the state-owned company Swedavia. The airport opened in 1962 and has grown into the principal base for Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) in Sweden.
Travellers come through Arlanda for city breaks in Stockholm, business trips and onward connections across the Nordic region and beyond.
The airport is about 40 km north of Stockholm Central Station, and roughly the same distance from the university city of Uppsala. Fast rail links make the gap feel much shorter than it looks on a map.
Arlanda uses terminals numbered 2, 3, 4 and 5. There has never been a Terminal 1. Terminals 4 and 5 are linked airside, and Sky City, between them, holds shops, restaurants and a hotel. Always check your booking for the terminal, as airlines move between buildings from time to time.
SAS operates a wide network from here, and Norwegian also has a strong presence. Many other European and long-haul carriers fly to Arlanda, including Finnair, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France and British Airways. Routes and schedules change often, so check the current timetable for your dates.
This non-stop train reaches Stockholm Central Station in around 18 minutes. It stops at Arlanda South, under Terminals 2 to 4, and Arlanda North, under Terminal 5.
Commuter and regional trains call at Arlanda Central Station and are a slower but useful option, especially for Uppsala.
Flygbussarna coaches run between the terminals and central Stockholm. Taxis wait outside each terminal.
Stockholm spreads across islands, so the old town of Gamla Stan, the Vasa Museum on Djurgården and the waterfront at Strandvägen are all easy to combine in a day. Uppsala, with its cathedral and historic university, is close to the airport as well.
The Arlanda Express stations are directly beneath the terminals, so you can walk from the platform to check-in. Leave plenty of time in winter, when snow can slow road traffic. If you are connecting between Terminals 4 and 5, follow the airside signs rather than exiting.
