Stayed here for 1 night and was very satisfied with the room and service. We checked in early and were offered an upgrade for a small charge. Room was pretty spacious and the bathroom was also pretty big. The hot water and shower pressure was excellent, and the body wash/soap was also very nice. What we also appreciated was the built-in adaptors at our desk. Very, very convenient. We requested late check-out and were allowed to check out at 3 PM without extra charge. I didn't try the gym, but it seemed really decent with a variety of equipment. At the lobby level near the receptionists, free water and popcorn are provided. Location is strategic, and opposite the hotel there is a small mall with a supermarket. Overall, highly recommended!

Our stay at Berjaya Penang Hotel was truly enjoyable. The hotel location is very strategic, with plenty of restaurants nearby, and it is conveniently situated right in the heart of the city. We were very satisfied with the Family Room. It was spacious, comfortable, and perfect for our family of 4. The bed linens and duvet were clean, the beds were large and comfortable, the room had a beautiful view, and the bathroom was also very clean. The customer service was excellent. All the staff were incredibly friendly and went above and beyond to fulfill all of my requests. Thank you Berjaya Penang Hotel for making our stay such a pleasant experience. Special thanks to all the wonderful staff!

When I arrived for check-in, for obvious reasons the hotel staff explained convincingly, I was offered an alternative room for consideration. Instead of Premier King Room I reserved, I accepted the offer of Deluxe Room (Room 801), which I did not regret! Keep up the good work!

More about hotels in Georgetown

Hotels in Georgetown Penang — Your Complete Guide

Georgetown is the cultural heart of Penang and one of the most captivating heritage districts in Southeast Asia. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, Georgetown's compact heritage core is a living museum of pre-war shophouses, Chinese clan houses, Indian temples, Malay mosques, and grand colonial buildings — all layered together in a walkable grid of narrow streets and atmospheric alleyways. In recent years, Georgetown has become internationally famous for its street art scene, sparked by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic's murals including the iconic "Children on Bicycle" on Armenian Street. But Georgetown's greatest claim to fame remains its extraordinary street food, with hawker legends serving char koay teow, assam laksa, Hokkien mee, and curry mee from decades-old family stalls. Traveloka lists hotels in Georgetown starting from RM 80/night, spanning restored heritage shophouse guesthouses, contemporary boutique hotels, and international-brand luxury properties.

Best Streets to Stay in Georgetown

Georgetown's heritage core is remarkably compact — most major attractions are within a 1–2 km radius, making it one of the most walkable destinations in Malaysia.

Love Lane and Lebuh Chulia

Love Lane is Georgetown's original backpacker strip and remains one of the most popular areas for budget and mid-range travellers. The narrow lane and the adjacent Lebuh Chulia are lined with restored shophouse guesthouses, boutique hotels, cafes, and bars. From here, you are within a 5-minute walk of the main street art murals, Khoo Kongsi, and multiple hawker food centres.

Budget: RM 80–150/night  |  Mid-range: RM 170–300/night  |  Luxury: RM 400–800/night

Jalan Penang and Beach Street (Lebuh Pantai)

The commercial core of Georgetown runs along Jalan Penang and Lebuh Pantai. This area features colonial-era buildings alongside boutique hotels and upscale guesthouses. A 5-minute walk from the Clan Jetties, Chowrasta Market, and Fort Cornwallis.

Budget: RM 100–170/night  |  Mid-range: RM 200–380/night  |  Luxury: RM 450–900/night

Armenian Street (Lebuh Armenian)

The epicentre of Georgetown's street art scene. The lane itself is narrow and atmospheric, with heritage shophouses converted into galleries, boutique guesthouses, and artisan cafes. Khoo Kongsi, Georgetown's most spectacular Chinese clan house, is located at the end of this street.

Budget: RM 90–160/night  |  Mid-range: RM 180–320/night  |  Luxury: RM 400–800/night

Hotel Prices in Georgetown by Star Rating

Budget and 2-Star Hotels: RM 80–160/night. Restored shophouse guesthouses with compact but charming rooms. Air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and private bathrooms are standard.

3-Star Hotels: RM 150–300/night. Comfortable boutique hotels with individual room designs, breakfast included, and excellent locations within the heritage zone. The sweet spot for Georgetown accommodation.

4-Star Hotels: RM 300–600/night. Premium boutique hotels with full-service restaurants, concierge services, and superior amenities. Hotel Penaga and Campbell House represent this tier.

5-Star Hotels: RM 500–1,200/night. Georgetown's finest properties include the legendary Eastern and Oriental Hotel, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (The Blue Mansion), and Seven Terraces. Heritage landmarks offering world-class luxury.

Best Time to Visit Georgetown

Georgetown is a year-round destination since its attractions are primarily architectural, cultural, and culinary. The driest months are January to April. Hotel rates peak during Chinese New Year when Georgetown comes alive with celebrations. The best value months are March to May and September to October.

Getting to Georgetown

From Penang International Airport (PEN): Approximately 30–40 minutes by car. Grab rides cost RM 25–40.

From Butterworth (mainland): The Penang Ferry connects Butterworth to Georgetown in approximately 15 minutes.

Getting around Georgetown: The heritage core is best explored on foot. For longer distances, use Grab (RM 5–15) or rent a bicycle. Rapid Penang Bus 101 connects Georgetown to Batu Ferringhi.

Top Attractions Near Georgetown Hotels

Street Art Murals: Georgetown's world-famous collection of murals and iron caricatures. Most iconic: "Children on Bicycle" (Armenian Street), "Boy on Motorbike" (Ah Quee Street). Free self-guided walking maps available at most hotels.

Khoo Kongsi: The most elaborate Chinese clan house in Malaysia, featuring ornate carvings and ceramic sculptures.

Clan Jetties: Six wooden villages built on stilts over the water at Weld Quay. Chew Jetty is the most visited.

Kek Lok Si Temple: The largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia, approximately 20 minutes from Georgetown in Air Itam.

Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera): A colonial-era hill station at 833 metres, accessible by funicular railway. Panoramic views of Georgetown and the Penang Bridge.

Tips for Booking Georgetown Hotels on Traveloka

Book heritage boutique hotels early. Georgetown's best heritage properties have limited room inventory — many have fewer than 20 rooms.

Consider location over star rating. A well-located 3-star heritage boutique can offer a better experience than a generic 4-star hotel outside the heritage zone.

Check for street-facing vs courtyard rooms. Street-facing rooms may be noisier but more atmospheric, while courtyard rooms are quieter.

Use the Free Cancellation filter. Useful for Georgetown trips where you may want to adjust dates based on weather or event schedules.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Georgetown from Batu Ferringhi beach?

Georgetown is approximately 30 minutes by car or Grab from Batu Ferringhi beach (RM 20–35). Rapid Penang Bus 101 also connects Komtar in Georgetown to Batu Ferringhi every 15–20 minutes, taking about 45 minutes. Many Georgetown hotel guests do a day trip to Batu Ferringhi for the beach.

What is the best hawker food near Georgetown hotels?

Georgetown is Malaysia's street food capital. Top hawker spots within walking distance include Kimberley Street (char koay teow, duck rice), New Lane/Lorong Baru (hokkien mee, lok-lok), and the red garden food court on Leith Street. Gurney Drive Hawker Centre is a 10-minute Grab ride away. For assam laksa, Air Itam Laksa near Kek Lok Si Temple is a must-visit.

Are Georgetown heritage hotels suitable for families with children?

Many Georgetown heritage boutique hotels are better suited for couples and solo travellers due to compact room sizes and steep heritage staircases. For families, look for properties with family rooms — Hotel Penaga, Bayview Hotel Georgetown, and Cititel Penang offer more spacious family-friendly rooms. If you have young children and want a pool, consider staying in Batu Ferringhi instead and visiting Georgetown on day trips.

Which Georgetown street is best for hotels near Penang street art?

The Ernest Zacharevic street art murals are concentrated around Lebuh Armenian (Armenian Street) and nearby alleys. The most famous piece — "Children on a Bicycle" — is on Lebuh Armenian itself. For the closest hotel base, look for guesthouses on Love Lane, Muntri Street, or Lebuh Chulia — all within 2–5 minutes walk. The walking street art map from Tourism Penang lists 20+ murals reachable on foot from any Georgetown hotel.

What is the best hawker food to eat in Georgetown?

Georgetown is Malaysia's hawker capital. Must-try dishes and where to find them: Char Kway Teow (Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul nearby), Assam Laksa (Penang Road Famous Laksa), Cendol (Penang Road), Rojak (Jalan Hutton), Prawn Mee (Beach Street), Curry Mee (various). The best all-round hawker centres are New Lane Hawker Centre and Kimberley Street Night Market (evenings only). All are within 20 minutes walk of most Georgetown hotels.

What are the best boutique hotels in Georgetown?

Georgetown's heritage boutique hotel scene is exceptional. Top properties include Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (The Blue Mansion — a 38-room heritage hotel in a restored 19th century Straits Chinese mansion), Seven Terraces (elegant colonial townhouses), The Edison George Town (restored colonial building on Penang Road), and Campbell House. Most are restored pre-war shophouses or colonial bungalows in the UNESCO core. Rates range from RM 250–900/night.

Do I need a car to explore Georgetown?

No — Georgetown is Malaysia's most walkable heritage district. All major attractions (street art, Khoo Kongsi, Little India, clan jetties, hawker centres, Fort Cornwallis, Penang Museum) are within a 1–2 km radius of the UNESCO core. For Batu Ferringhi beach (30 min away) and Penang Hill (20 min by car to Air Itam), Grab is the most convenient option. Renting a bicycle is also popular for exploring Georgetown at a leisurely pace.

How much does a hotel in Georgetown cost?

Budget guesthouses on Love Lane and Chulia Street start from RM 80/night. Mid-range boutique hotels in restored shophouses cost RM 150–320/night. Premium heritage properties like Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion and Seven Terraces range from RM 400–900/night. Weekend prices are 20–40% higher than weekdays. Chinese New Year and the George Town Festival (July/August) are the busiest and most expensive periods.

Do Georgetown hotels offer free cancellation?

Many Georgetown hotels on Traveloka offer free cancellation. Use the Free Cancellation filter when searching. Boutique heritage properties may have stricter policies during Chinese New Year and festival periods. Booking 2–4 weeks in advance with free cancellation is recommended for Georgetown stays.

When is the George Town Festival?

The George Town Festival (GTF) is held annually in August, celebrating the anniversary of Georgetown's UNESCO World Heritage inscription (7 July 2008). It features performing arts, visual arts, heritage tours, and street performances across Georgetown's heritage core. Hotels fill up during the festival — book 1–2 months in advance. The adjacent George Town Literary Festival (GTLF) is usually held in November and is another major cultural event.
