The establishment of this hospital started after a fund-raising campaign was launched in 1876. Then, a traditional-style building was completed in 1883 on a plot of land about 10,600 sq. ft. at Muntri Street. “Lam Wah” means “Chinese in the South” and “Ee” means “medicine” hence the name, Hospital Lam Wah Ee. Within a few years, this became very popular as a source of medical services not only to the Chinese community but also to the other communities in Penang. Consequently, Muntri Street has since become known as “Lam Wah Ee Hospital Street”. Holding to the notion that the hospital shall be an independent, charitable and non-profit organisation, Hospital Lam Wah Ee aims to to provide medical services to the general public irrespective of race or religion, with free medical treatment given to destitute patients. Also, this hospital involves in sponsoring and undertaking research, teaching and training of medical personnel. With convenient and reasonable ward accommodation, all rooms here feature standard and modern amenities to deliver a comfortable service to both patients and visitors.
