Getting around in Batanes

There are several transportation options in Batanes, mostly via two and three-wheeled vehicles such as private bikes and motorcycles for rent, and tricycles. Public jeepneys are available too for town to town transit.

If you opt for a convenient ride, you can go for a guided tour which arranges your transpo via tricycle, jeepney or van to take you to your must-see tourist sites.

Batanes has two airports – Basco Airport for commercial flights from Manila, and Itbayat Airport for local flights from Basco. There are 4 to 8 seater local airlines that travel to Itbayat while sea transportation is thru a motorized banca or Faluwa.

This spot has one of the best views in Batanes overlooking the Pacific Ocean, rugged coastlines below, Tayid Lighthouse, and Mount Iraya that even inexperienced photographers can take beautiful photos here.

• Mt. Carmel Church

Also called as Tukon Chapel, this quaint chapel in Basco is the only one of its kind inspired by the Ivatan stone houses. Although it is the latest worship house built in the province, its eye-catching architecture made it popular in social media and print ads. Perfect for romantic weddings, it also has a scenic seascape view of the West Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

• Basco Lighthouse

Basco Lighthouse is an imposing 66-feet landmark in Naidi Hills. It was built as a working lighthouse and a tourist attraction with a viewing deck on the fifth floor. Its best for sunset viewing with the clear view of Basco town proper, West Philippine Sea, and Mt. Iraya.

• Valugan Boulder Beach

Unlike other fine sand beaches in the country, Valugan Boulder Beach has a unique stretch of boulders and stones from the volcanic eruptions of Mt. Iraya. Swimming is not recommended as strong waves from the Pacific Ocean slap the shore. Nonetheless, it is still an interesting photography subject especially when there are several rock balancing arts scattered around.
