Flights to Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul formerly known as Constantinople is the most populous city in Turkey and the country's economic, cultural and historical center. Istanbul is a transcontinental city in Eurasia, straddling the Bosporus Strait (which separates Europe and Asia) between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Its commercial and historical center lies on the European side and approximately one-third of its population lives in the suburbs on the Bosporus ' Asian side. With a total population of around 15 million residents in its metropolitan area, Istanbul is one of the world's most populous cities, ranking as the world's fourth largest city proper and the largest European city. Istanbul is viewed as a bridge between the East and West. The city's strategic position on the historic Silk Road, rail networks to Europe and the Middle East, and the only sea route between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean have produced a cosmopolitan populace. While Ankara was instead chosen after the Turkish War of Independence as the new Turkish capital and the name of the city was changed to Istanbul, the city has maintained its prominence in geopolitical and cultural affairs. Arts, music, film, and cultural festivals were set up towards the end of the 20th century, and today the city continues to host them. Infrastructure improvements have produced a complex transportation network in the city.

What are the Top 3 Things to Do in Istanbul?

Istanbul is one of the best towns in Turkey that have a lot of beautiful places to be visited. You cannot miss Istanbul when traveling around Turkey!

1. Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) - Sultan Ahmed built the mosque in 1616 as a show of Ottoman power. It is perhaps Istanbul's most picturesque building, complemented by the breathtaking architecture inside. Since it has more than 20,000 blue Iznik tiles adorning the interiors, the mosque gets its unofficial nickname, showing many stunning designs. The mosque has a dome collection and six towering minarets on the outside.

2. Basilica Cistern - It was built to provide water supply to the Great Palace and the complex surrounding it, and it could hold 80,000 cubic meters of water. The astonishing thing about this cistern is the amount of precision that has gone into its construction. It has a total of 336 marble columns, engraved with various symbols, organized into 12 rows of 28 columns, each spaced by precisely 4.9 meters. There are only a few feet of water in the cistern today, above which platforms were built for people to tour it. Another interesting feature here is that there are two columns with bases depicting Medusa's head.

3. Hagia Sophia - The Hagia Sophia is one of the most overwhelming pieces of architecture you will ever see. It is widely considered to be the epitome of Byzantine architecture, and after one visit you can see why. There are also several points of interest here, such as the Lustration Urns, the supposedly supernatural Wishing Column, the Marble Door, and the Loge of the Empress. There are continuous restoration works going on in the building since it deteriorated due to neglect over the years, but it is Turkey's busiest museum.
